I am constantly irritated with Roger and Brianna. Am I the only one? They are super tough characters for me.

I don't find Bree as bad in this book because she doesn't seem to really do anything here other than breastfeed and go on about her swollen breasts but in the last book I wanted to shake her senseless for her rampant and repeated stupidity. I mean really, who in their right mind walks unaccompanied into the lair of a big, bad and clearly rapey pirate and expects to come out unscathed?? *grinds teeth*

As for Roger, for a man that suffers long and repeated hardships all he seems to give a crap about is boning Bree. It's literally all he ever thinks about. He seems to have no other character traits other than the fact that he sings and is too unskilled to live in the 1700s. (less)

I am half-way through this book and I'm still waiting for heart-pounding excitement. Where are the sword fights? So far, only one minor conflict that just fizzled out. Claire and Jamie are just going along in life. Please tell me if I'm almost to the excitement......

Lisa Brooks I agree, I am having hard time with his character. I find him arrogant, self absorbed and too jealous of Jamie.

I love the Claire and Jamie characters. They are this story. No matter what Ms. Gabaldon puts Brianna and Roger through, I just can't get into them, they are pale by comparison. Roger started out as a bit of a stuffed shirt historian, and even in this book in which he goes through much adversity, I just don't care...I want to get on with the good bits (meaning Claire and Jamie!) Does anyone else feel that?

Skimming passages of sheer tedium and then finding wonderful narrative and comedy. The opening didn’t help, taking so long to bring the Gathering to an end. I would rename it The Cracked Nipple rather than The Fiery Cross. Breast milk references recurring with monotonous regularity. (less)
