But you don't have to read the whole book to attain a lot of American History. Viewed through the lens of NYC, I learned about so much of America - the corporations, finance history, WW I, feminism, race relations and social programs to conquer poverty. But when you begin reading about the history of immigration you'll really be glad you're dipping into 19th and 20th history. I found that it really gave me perspective on 'today's migrant issues'.
It's so darn well written that I can't even imagine how he did it. So dense but so clean and appealing. GREAT great book. Don't let size scare you. Get the Kindle and then it's light. But the main thing, you don't have to read it all to learn and be amazed by lightening fast and threatening-feeling changes that growth and technology wrought on our country during 1900.(less)
