Now the dolls were quite used to this sort of thing. It happened every day. But it never lasted very long. It happened whenever Susan had other things to think about—whenever Susan had other things to do.
Who was Susan?
Susan was the Wonderful Person to whom the Dolls belonged. She was so big they had never seen all of her—that is, not all of her at one time. Once in a while they saw her whole face. But usually it was only part of her face and one or the other of her taffy-colored pigtails. Susan's hands were what they saw most often.

There was no front to the Doll house. Susan could reach right in and move things about. With one of her hands she could pick up three children at once, or both Mr. and Mrs. Doll together. But they were not a bit afraid, for Susan was very gentle. She never dropped anybody. Susan could lift a whole bed with six children asleep in it right out of the house and put it back without even waking them, so gentle was she.(less)
