Do you need to read some other books to understand some essays in this one?

Only in the case of Nerval's "Sylvie" is familiarity really necessary--but "Sylvie" is a good read on its own, and fairly brief.

Otherwise, I read his essay on Dante before actually reading Paradiso, and so was better prepared for what I met there. Eco makes many references, of course, to dozens of writers and works and to literary terms we may or may not be familiar with, but nowhere do these really require more than a quick look-up to follow. More, I was able to make a short list of TBR works after completing this collection!(less)
