This was my first exposure to Penman and I almost gave up because of the uninteresting beginning. I'm glad I stayed with it, because it paid off, but wish I knew the answer. All I can think is that she wanted to draw us into the realities of the world for women (which she does well) and to show us the context in which strong women emerge later in the story. That's my thought, but I could be persuaded otherwise.(less)
