If you are interested in these books, but don't want to commit to both, then you can definitely read this one and enjoy it at face value before deciding if you want to read the sequel (Lord of Emperors).

I waited a year or so before reading the second book, without feeling pressed for closure. Interestingly, I enjoyed the second one even more than the first.(less)
