Hi Caroline,

With the ending still fresh in my eyes, your exact same question brought me here. The ending makes it clear that contrary to our expectations Shahid miraculously lived, whereas the young man—Michael’s brother—dies (out of unbearable shame? Guilt?). I haven’t a clue what Michael had to tell the protagonist.

Here’s my theory. Perhaps this ultrasound scene takes place after Michael’s brother dies, and so what he had to tell her was that his brother had passed away. When he found his brother deceased in his apartment, he became curious about the first person narrator with whom his brother was in love.

The timeline of events is ambiguous. If we got a clearer understanding of when characters interacted and events took place, I believe we’d be able to piece the story better.

Did you ever get the impression that the short blonde with square glasses was the first-person narrator?(less)
