The story-lines, the characters, the style of writing but most of all the wonderful feel for the Hebridean Islands and Lewis in particular. You can almost taste, feel and smell these islands - it has made me want to visit again, soon! I have rarely read such amazing writing in a crime fiction book.(less)

How damned long does it take to read this novel? Three days, four days, five days? Surely not longer than that. I've been waiting like it seems forever to this obtain from my library. I've been 3rd on the list for what it seems like weeks.

Katherine May's writing is complex and skimming doesn't work. There are other authors who have short chapters, short sentences and are not even close to being as satisfying as Peter May.(less)

This really sounds interesting and atmospheric, but I am concerned about the slaughtering of seabirds. That is really disturbing to me, and makes me not want to give this book a chance. If the birds do get slaughtered in the "rite of passage", how descriptive or violent is it?

However, the book concerns a brutal murder of a human. The murder and subsequent post mortem are covered in detail.
