One scene plays over and over in the memory of the main character; that scene involves an adolescent girl. There is incest. There is consensual adult sexuality. There is a highly nuanced exploration of slavery in the Roman time.
Not for a typical fifteen year old.
If you want this child to read about Rome, maybe go to the Lindsey Davis series with the Roman detective Marcus Didius Falco. He has lots of sex, but it is done with fade-out, not details. He has a disapproving mother and a big extended family. He has money problems. A child might find him easy to relate to because he has a good bit of hapless adolescent in him. (less)

On the one hand, proscribed men were enemies of The State, it was not only legal, but one’s obligation to kill them. On the other hand, parricide and especially patricide, was one of the biggest taboos and definitely an illegal act. I don’t think there was any precedent to say that one over-ruled the other. Add to that, the proscriptions were quasi-legal at best, only permissible because dictators had absolute power. And once the dictator held onto the position longer than the one year he was legally limited to, was anything done by his order legal? The real answer is that the Roman Republic was a hot mess at the time this book was set and, frankly, might made right. Even the best legal minds of the time would not have been able to answer that question definitively. (less)
