They are representative of the time period. I did not find them unsympathetic to the peoples of the countries. They certainly didn't elicit from me any sympathy for the British rulers. They were enlightening and entertaining. Colonialism is still a problem today. See Puerto Rico. Novels are a good way to educate people painlessly and stir interest. Many people know nothing about India or Madagascar. The novels are not meant to be serious history but they do give one some idea of how things were.(less)
