In this way you get a much fuller picture of the French revolution. It has modern parallels with more recent revolutions which have many factions. By making the characters alive, the novel, for all its great length, is a good satisfying read. (less)

I don't know if the portrayal of Camille Desmoulins, or any of the others is true. It is how they come across to you in Mantel's interpretations of each. She built the characterizations and dialogues around the events and what was left behind that she could find in the history books.(less)
