In this case, the invention is that this book is a journal which was written by Henry VIII himself and then discovered after his death by his court fool, Will Somers. Hence the "With Notes by His Fool, Will Somers" in the second part of the title. It is framed in the context of Will Somers sending the journal (with his annotations) to the (presumed to be) bastard daughter of the late King, Catherine Carey. Thus the journal is an autobiography of King Henry VIII in this fictional context. (less)
