Is this a good BDO novel? Is it suspenseful, well written, hard sf? Or more space opera? What did you think?

Imo Reed writes hard SF, but not near future hard SF, so you can read it a bit as a Space Opera as well, meaning it is well entertaining, there is some action.
I can understand though why Luke gave it 3 stars and not more. It has lengths and it has couple of downsides; so while I enjoyed reading it for the ideas and the action, I will give it a couple of years before I touch it again.

If you are not sure whether to dig your teeth into this, I can recommend the following:
- the Great Ship collection of short stories set in the same Universe (in fact the same Spaceship)
