Dana Al-Basha | دانة الباشا Gosh! They're all in my list!

message 2: by Ženija (new)

Ženija Wow, the Harry Potter series is still going strong! I kind of had a feeling that after the last movie came out, the series would eventually die out. I've been proven severely wrong.

message 3: by Lit (new)

Lit Reader On the Overall Top 12 list, the only male author is John Green, plus the two co-authors of The Cursed Child.

message 4: by Kay (new)

Kay Man, this list is incredibly bland.

Nick Green Ženija wrote: "Wow, the Harry Potter series is still going strong! I kind of had a feeling that after the last movie came out, the series would eventually die out. I've been proven severely wrong."

Especially with the the two new books and movies, the franchise is better than ever.

message 7: by Erin (new)

Erin Yeah, my tastes in reading are clearly different than most people's. And I'm ok with that.

message 8: by Johara (new)

Johara I've read only 2 books from the whole list ... Obviously my books selection is completely different from the rest ... Was hoping to see more original books ... Lets hope next year people get more creative with their choices

message 9: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Moore Wes wrote: ""The Girl on the Train" is the only one I read from the list, and I didn't like it. My favorites of the year were by Peter James, Paul Doiron, Harlan Coben, and Elly Griffiths."

That's the only one I read from the list as well.

Nicoleta The fault in our stars from this list.

same

message 12: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca I'm not entirely surprised that virtually all of the "Overall" top books are ones that have been/will be made into films. Films can be a really good way to find out about books - I picked up The Light Between Oceans and Silence due to hearing about their respective film adaptations.

Out of that top 12, I (finally) read the first HP book this year and am aiming to try and read the other 6 in 2017.

2016 for me has also been about rediscovering comics - helped by finally actually having a decent local comic book shop! (Special shout-out and thanks to Charles Soule, Phil Noto and the team behind the brilliant Star Wars: Poe Dameron series)
Poe Dameron, Vol. 1: Black Squadron

I've also caught up on some of the more recent Star Wars novels thanks to finding them in my local libraries, although it might be a while before I feel up to reading any more SW after Carrie's passing.

My challenge this year was to read 52 books and I smashed it, so in 2017, the target will be 75. And I managed to get a job in my local library so that should help me find lots of new books to read :)

message 13: by Tom (new)

Tom Why limit the source of the list to the reading challenges? Surely there are people marking books as read without participating in reading challenges?

message 14: by the_cat (new)

the_cat Wonder what is the average age of those readers.

message 15: by Huda (new)

Huda Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

message 16: by Gerhard (new)

Gerhard Interesting how this reflects on the Goodreads Choice Awards.

Jenny Rebecca wrote: "I'm not entirely surprised that virtually all of the "Overall" top books are ones that have been/will be made into films. Films can be a really good way to find out about books - I picked up [book:..."

I didn't think about that almost all of those books have movie adaptions, but you are so right! I agree that movies are a good way to find new books, after all, there are so many books out there and if you liked the movie you seem to be guaranteed a good read.

Jordan Thurman Ženija wrote: "Wow, the Harry Potter series is still going strong! I kind of had a feeling that after the last movie came out, the series would eventually die out. I've been proven severely wrong."

I think the fact that Cursed Child was released this year, as well as the Fantastic Beasts movie, really helped boost interest in the series again.

message 19: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) my favourite is not in this list

message 20: by PreePree (new)

PreePree I love seeing this kind of information. Awesome! I read 9 of the 24.

J Oh man, great books! Love Middlesex and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings :)

message 23: by Deanne (last edited Dec 29, 2016 07:47PM) (new)

Deanne Patterson None of these interest me. I am an avid reader of Christian fiction. I've read 329 books so far this year. Currently reading 2 more.

message 24: by Sara (new)

Sara It Ends With Us. definitely the best one! ❤❤

message 25: by Paul (new)

Paul Hollis Meh. Way to many ya books.

message 26: by Cate (new)

Cate Bartholomew My favorite reads this year was Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Very intense.

message 27: by Ann (new)

Ann None of those was among the 117 I've read this year. The only one I think I will read is To Kill a Mockingbird, and that interests me most because I saw the film many, many years ago.

message 28: by Mkotch (new)

Mkotch My favorite read this year was All the Light We Cannot See.

message 29: by Titan3lla (new)

Titan3lla totally agree.

message 32: by Lei (new)

Lei Added more books to my un-read lists

message 33: by mRose (new)

mRose the_cat wrote: "Wonder what is the average age of those readers."

I agree. These seem very much 24 and under group. But honestly those over 30 probably doesn't hold much time to keep up with a challenge per se.

Franco Lit wrote: "On the Overall Top 12 list, the only male author is John Green, plus the two co-authors of The Cursed Child."

Yup. Skews young.

Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ I've only read one of those this year, and I didn't give it a very high rating. I'm not too surprised by the list though.

message 38: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnes My favorite was not on the list. I really, enjoyed reading "Fool Me Once" by Harlan Coben.

message 39: by Cam (new)

Cam Anyone know when 2017 starts or u can pledge

message 40: by Bill (new)

Bill Golden Don't adults read adult books anymore?

Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ Bill wrote: "Don't adults read adult books anymore?"

My mom and you would get along very well, she hates YA and doesn't get why anyone her age would willingly read it.

message 42: by Donna (new)

Donna I only read 2 books from the list and one of them I read a long time ago. The one I read this year as Me Before You.

message 43: by M.R. (new)

M.R. Tom wrote: "Why limit the source of the list to the reading challenges? Surely there are people marking books as read without participating in reading challenges?"

I'd be interested in seeing the overall most-read books as well!

message 44: by Tim (new)

Tim I read seven of them over all, one was the first time, and three were re read this year.

message 45: by Kurt (new)

Kurt Is there a " 2016 Reading Challenge's Most-Read ADULT Books"? seems that this list is half young adult books... which I always immediately disregard.

message 46: by Lysergius (new)

Lysergius "Mostly harmless" is how I would describe this list. There is nothing on it that would challenge a well read twelve year old. Moreover, popularity is no measure of value. What about the least read books of 2016?

message 47: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Lysergius wrote: ""Mostly harmless" is how I would describe this list. There is nothing on it that would challenge a well read twelve year old. Moreover, popularity is no measure of value. What about the least read ..."

The LEAST read books would indeed make an interesting list.

message 48: by Lei (new)

Lei Barbara wrote: “The LEAST read books would indeed make an interesting list. "

Too many books, like non-English books, wrong-added editions

message 49: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Michael wrote: "Is there a " 2016 Reading Challenge's Most-Read ADULT Books"? seems that this list is half young adult books... which I always immediately disregard."

I agree...I noticed that many of the titles seem to be from the YA genre.

Can they not be filtered? Even if not it would still be an interesting list...
