50 Million Reviews!
In late 2006, I wrote the first book review on Goodreads. It was a simple, two-paragraph review of A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson (5 stars – I recommend it) and I had no idea how popular a book recommendation and review site could become. Since then, you all have really made the review space your own. I may be biased, but I think Goodreads reviews are the best book reviews anywhere! Today, we have reviews that share personal experiences, reviews that include actor photos for dream casts of the book’s characters, quick-but-sharp summary reviews, and so many enthusiastic “you have got to read this!” reviews. There are reviews that push your thinking, and ones that create deep discussion.
In retrospect, it should be no surprise that readers – the consummate lovers of words – would also be eager to write. Many of our reviewers have developed their own distinctive style and won an audience that loves their creativity as much as their recommendations. The amazing diversity of reactions and approaches is what makes Goodreads reviews so unique and enjoyable. And now, just over nine years later, we’ve reached a new milestone: 50 million reviews!
On behalf of the Goodreads team, I wanted to give a huge thank you to all of you who've written such amazing reviews over the years. I hope you've found it as rewarding as I do to look back at your reviews, months or even years later, and re-live each reading experience. We're also proud of the fact that we're helping readers all over the world build an online record of the books they've read and what they think of them. And I know I speak for book lovers everywhere when I say that your reviews help so many of us discover our next favorite book.

Thanks for letting me know that I'm in the Top 1%, and congratulations on all you've accomplished in your almost 10 years of activity. In the 5 years since I joined, Goodreads has become one of my most-used, and favorite websites/apps. Here's to 10 more years!
Goodreads is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I love being able to keep track of my reading!
Thanks for the perk! Goodreads is my favorite app ever- Keeps me organized, inspires me with new reads, and is a venue to voice my own reviews- There is a real connection to the authors, and to other readers like myself-
Mine was my review of this book on the JonBenet Ramsey case (which has fascinated me for years) -- https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...Made my day to get this award this morning!
Today, I guess I'll give a shout-out to Guy Gavriel Kay's 'River of Stars,' since I'm excited to read Kay's latest novel soon!Review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Check out my other reviews here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
WHAT!!!??? Really the top 1% WoW! . ☆*:.。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:*☆Congratulations on a great site Otis and congratulations on 50 Million!

Of course, this is a reading site, ..."I had the same thought, Bethe! I got an email saying I'm in the "top 1% of reviewers" with 268 reviews, which surprised me because that seems lilke a low number. I've read and rated more than 1,000, though -- does that figure into the calculation? I don't write a review for every single book I read, but I do give each one a star rating when I'm finished.
Or is GR just sending out the same email to everyone to make us all feel good about our reading/reviewing habits? ;)
(Yes, I'm cynical. I'm also skeptical of such a high percentage of 5-star ratings---37% of all books on GR are "amazing"? I think I have a different definition of that word than most people!)
Kaethe wrote: "How do I find out what my most-liked review is? Suddenly I'm dying to know."Kaethe, you can view these by visiting your read shelf (or any other exclusive shelf that you add your reviewed books to) on your My Books page, and then clicking the settings option above your book list. Check the "votes" box to add a column showing how many Likes each of your reviews has received:

You can then click on the column heading to sort by the amount of votes.
Probably it depends both on total number of reviews, as well as frequency. I know when I first joined I reviewed numerous books very quickly, but that was because I'd read them previously to joining the site.
I am both pleased and surprised to be in the top 1%. I only review the books I actually read and can make positive comments about. It's a great way for me to recall who and what I've read. Thank you Goodreads for offering this service. I also follow what Goodreads reviewers have to say about my own novels. Goodreads input is important to me as an author.
Congrats and thank you Goodreads! wow :O top 1% of reviewers! cant believe im actually part of that LOL my day is done for, now ;)
I love Goodreads and would be lost without the organization that the site offers. I found wonderful people here and who share a love of reading.
It's a pleasure to be part of this great community that loves books.
Thank you for everything!
After all these comments, there isn't more word to say.. Just thank u all.. The good reads team, and the good readers we have here...
Although, the book is one of my favorite guilty pleasures Navessa's Allen's review of Real, by Katy Evans is hands down the funniest I've ever read! https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Congratulazioni a Goodreaders per i 50 milioni di recensioni, e grazie , sono felice di essere una dei Top 1%.I love Goodreads community.
I absolutely love goodreads and love your Friday question of the week...i always get good books from reading all those comments and of course putting in mine as well...everything about goodreads makes you who you are...keep up the good work..you make a lot of people happy
What an honor to have bestowed on me first thing in the morning. I have never stopped reading a book no matter how much I disliked it. I feel I can't give an honest review if I don't give the author the consideration in finishing it. I think my best review is coming with
Separate Beds as I think it is so powerful and emotional. But my best is Baby Girl

I can't say what my favorite review is, but I do skim over the reviews where most of the book is re-reviewed before the reader can give their opinion. I'm always looking to read the unique and slightly different reviews whether they are 5 stars or 1 star.I review, to re-chat about the book for myself, not that I will gain a follower. Followers do make me smile though, because it represents a silent mini book club meeting.
Thanks for the warm fuzzy email Goodreads Staff!
Thank you for this site! As an avid (AVID) reader, this has been a wonderful find. The chance to share my opinions and to see other peoples views of books and characters has been amazing!

Which means they/we are the first ones to write in.
I was also told I at the 1% but I've only reviewed under 300! hmmm strange. this was my top review. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

If I rated all the books on my "did not finish" or "partly read" shelves, my average would drop quite a bit. (Even though I seem to be one of the "harsher critics": my ratings follow the normal distribution. That's because I give 5 stars ("amazing") only to books that have shaped my life in some tangible way. They're few and far between. :)
Thanks so much for the honor to be a top 1percent reviewer. That means a lot to me. I try to be fair and honest.
Thanks for all the book friendships Goodreads have created! I'll take a "top 1% review" ranking any day! Much love guys :)
Re: why so many top 1% reviewers?A rough estimate of the total number of registered Goodreaders (judging by the numerical ID of a recently registered friend of mine) is somewhere north of 50 million.
1% of these is 500,000+.
Our name is LEGION. :D
P.S. However, lest we grow smug or something, also consider the number of authors: they're more than 15 million.
Not much has changed since three years ago. :DDD
Thank you for the email this morning, and thank you every day for the Goodreads site. What a community! I was very surprised to be in the top 1%.My most liked review was for The Girl in the Spider's Web, the first post-Steig Larsson book.
Quick math. Goodreads enjoys forty-two million unique users, according to Quantcast. One percent of that is four hundred twenty thousand readers. We're the ones who received the overnight email congratulating us on our achievement. Put another way, Goodreads today celebrates fifty million reviews. Spread over forty-two million members, that's a rough average of one review per member. And that's why we rose to the top one percent.
Waking up today to the email congratulating us as the top one-percent of the reviewers at Goodreads. Maybe we'll get a badge for our profile.
Debbi wrote: "my most liked reviews is for "The Shack". I think it's rather funny that I got so many likes for a book I hated"There are too many books to read, so I look for good 1-star and 2-star reviews to put me off. Thanks!
As an author, I think it's vital to read, too. It keeps the mind active, searching and filled with wonders. It also sparks the imagination. If only I could get these many reviews for my works!
I can only say that I was sent an email to say that I was in the top 1% of reviewers, how it was decided, I don't know.
Love to write and read, whatever folks think, and I do like to support other independent authors.
Thank you for noting my small contribution to Goodreads. Everyone's contributions, regardless of size, is what makes the community vibrant, strong and engaging. Good reading and writing everyone.
Goodreads has been, and hopefully will continue to be, a wonderful site for readers to share the good and bad and everything in between of their reading experiences. Thank you Goodreads!
I also got an email that I am under the Top 1% reviewers. "Maar buiten is het feest" van Arthur Japin was my most looked at. So happy to read and review and to choose a next good book!
Miss Ryoko wrote: "Katrina's review of Fifty Shades is amazing. If you haven't read it, you must!!"Can you point it out to me, please?
Wow, that's a surprise! One of the top 1% of reviewers here on Goodreads. I now always review what I've read, as I think the information helps other readers to decide which of the millions of books out there to read.I'll continue to do this for as long as I'm able. Apparently my best liked review as of Dorothea Brande's excellent 'Becoming a Writer', which seems an appropriate result for someone who writes and reads with passion.
Great! Now go read "The Nightengale" and "Wild" the two best books for everyone in Feb/March.
Goodreads is fantastic!!!!!
Caz wrote: "Im in the top 1% of reviewers ... wish there was a way of displaying this on my profile."Me too! And I specially came to check my Goodreads to see if I got a badge on my profile or something :-D
To grab the Top 1% badge, just hover your mouse over the badge, and there will be a little arrow to click which downloads the graphic.
I am active in Goodreads only in updating the books I already read and listing those that I want to read. I felt obliged to write my first review this last week of March for a book because I was the first one to review it and I gave it a 1 star, haha. Don't be mistaken though, I enjoy writing as much as reading. Since then, I am now writing reviews because it helps me digest what I've read and express my feelings freely. Goodreads, thank you and congratulations for the 50 million reviews!
Very cool, thank you guys for even creating GR, I love it! I use it as an organization tool, a way to connect and have fun chats w/people who like the same kinds of books as I do, and to find out about new reads. So glad I could be included in this group of top 1% reviewers.
I like reviews that tell me what the reader thought about the book. I can't stand reviews that summarise the plot. Don't waste your time reproducing the blurb, people! just say what you liked and didn't like

I'm probably overthinking it though, haha. But I'm always curious about the numbers behind everything anyway. Not that I'm not pleased to be able to say I'm in the 1% of something.
