From Anna Quindlen and Veronica Roth to Arianna Huffington and Jason Segel! These authors and many more have advanced to the Semifinal Round—thanks to your support. More than 1 million votes were cast in the Opening Round of the 2014 Goodreads Choice Awards for almost 14,000 different books! We've now added the top five write-ins in each category as official nominees, bringing the total to 20 nominated books in each of 20 categories. Congratulations to all of our nominees!
The competition in Best Fiction has only gotten stiffer, with Ian McEwan and Rene Denfeld joining the ranks. Two debut authors, Mary Kubica and Laura McHugh, garnered enough write-ins to join the battle in Best Mystery & Thriller alongside heavy hitters like Lee Child and David Baldacci. Another newcomer, Erika Johansen, has earned her stripes in Best Fantasy, where she faces established bestsellers Robin Hobb and Anne Bishop. OKCupid founder Christian Rudder and essayist Leslie Jamison are among the new nominees in Best Nonfiction. And fan favorites such as Leigh Bardugo and Maggie Stiefvater have rounded out the roster in Best Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction. View all the Semifinalists »
Don't wait to vote, because your favorites need your help to make it into the Finals. The Semifinal Round closes November 15, and then only 10 books in each category will advance to the Final Round, which launches November 17!

it was also published in Oct 2013 - which is before the eligibility window for this years awards ;)

There's a couple of kid's books that I just haven't gotten to on the list, too. I wrote in a title for the middle school/kid's category, but it didn't go through. The Mark of the Dragonfly was such a fun book. Oh, well. Hopefully I'll be on top of things a little better next year. (But with as many books already published to read... )

Hey that's how things how for me too.. And i would just do exactly what you said.

These things are popularity contests. The problem is, it will help determine what the corpo-publishers will cut down whole forests for next year to churn out. Sad!

The Goldfinch was published in 2013 - It was nominated last year in the fiction category but did not even come close to winning which I thought was surprising.

I'm quessing, you voted for Kidd's The invention Of Wings. I did.

they add in the top 5 write-in's for each category into the semi-finals round - which is why there are as many books in this round, as the previous one

Probably because it came out in 2013?? But it came out at the end of 2013 and gained it's popularity in 2014 I think. However, I do feel like it won many contests in 2013 too.. Anyways, GREAT book!!!

It's just I find the ghost written Celebrity tripe rather tedious.
