Introducing Goodreads for Facebook Timeline

Posted by Otis Chandler on January 18, 2012

British playwright Alan Bennett once said, "A bookshelf is as particular to its owner as are his or her clothes; a personality is stamped on a library just as a shoe is shaped by the foot." At Goodreads, we completely agree. That's why we're excited to announce a new Goodreads app for Facebook Timeline.

Timeline—Facebook's redesigned profile—lets you easily track all of the things that are important to you across time. Goodreads members already share more than 12 million books a month with each other, and now with the Goodreads app for Timeline it's easy to share your books with all your Facebook friends, some of whom may not be Goodreads members—yet!

For book lovers, your Facebook Timeline is incomplete without sharing what you're reading. If you connect your Facebook account to Goodreads, you can share the books you're currently reading, as well as your new reviews, progress updates, and quotes, on your Timeline. It's a great way to share the books you love with everyone—regardless of whether you got the book from your library or you read it on your ereader.

Goodreads for Facebook Timeline displays your progress through the books you read.

The Facebook News Feed and Ticker create serendipity—such as showing you when two of your friends were reading the same article or listening to the same band. Now, with Goodreads for Timeline, you'll learn when two friends are reading the same book at the same time. Who knows, maybe you'll end up starting a new book club.

We also know how important it is to keep track of your reading. Facebook Timeline will help with this by creating interesting statistics on what you've read. The Goodreads summary will show which authors you've read the most each month and year, and also give you a roundup of your monthly books and pages read!

Timeline provides a summary of your monthly reading activity.

Starting today, you can add the books you're reading to your Timeline. In the future, you may be able to go back in time to add all the books from your Goodreads shelves that you've already read, so you can display your favorite books from all the important moments in your life. That would have made Louis L'Amour very happy: "Once you have read a book you care about, some part of it is always with you."

Adding Goodreads to your Timeline will give you a yearly report on the books and authors you love.

To add Goodreads to your Timeline click on this button:

You can also add Timeline from the apps tab in the "my account" section.

Here at Goodreads, we want to help people read more and discover great books, and we're happy to offer yet another way to do this with Goodreads for Facebook Timeline. As Chad Harbach wrote in his recent bestseller The Art of Fielding, "So much of one's life was spent reading; it made sense not to do it alone."

Gary, I have given up on this app integrating reliably with FB. Right now my timeline shows GR and "Books Read", but not my Current Read, and I know from experience that will disappear, and then reappear again at some later, random point. It does not matter how you configure your settings on FB with the GR app, it just does not integrate smoothly or reliably. At this point I cannot get GR to show up in my list of apps that I use, so cannot configure it from there anyway. It has not been there for months, yet apps I never use any longer are still on there. I apologize for not having something more positive to say :), but I have struggled with the FB/GR integration since Timeline was introduced and there just does not seem to be any sure solution for it to work correctly.

Deborah Mends Hi - I would just love Goodreads to post to my BUSINESS fan page, not my personal page. Is that possible?

I have been having the exact same issue for the past month of so. I have checked all my settings on both GR and FB, and zip. What irks me the most about this is that it used to work perfectly, then for no apparent reason it decided to only show the most read authors list, and if I remove it, it shows nothing at all!

message 404: by Carol (new)

Carol Smith Please, please keep working on the FB Timeline issue. It's almost certainly THE most important feature for encouraging more GoodReads participation. It's just not sufficient to post authors read to a timeline (esp. when the read counts are not accurate) - Perhaps there is someone out there that GoodReads can consult? Where there's a will, there's a way.

Victoria (TheMennomilistReads) This app was working for a few months but now it only shows when I am marking something read or to-read on recent activity but not showing up at all on my wall with the list of books I have read this month like it had done, which I liked.

message 406: by jen (new)

jen The app hasn't been working for awhile. According to it I'm still reading a book that I finished in June.

message 407: by Mark (new)

Mark http://www.amazon.com/White-Male-Priv... Earlier this evening I went to visit my father in the hospital. While I was there his blood pressure started to decline. He was asleep but as soon as he heard me talking with Julie he turned his head. I prayed with him and shared the gospel. The nurse asked me if I wanted a chaplain to come. I said, "Yes." The room became full of the holy spirit. I told my father that he could let go now. As the chaplain arrived I saw my father take his last breath of life. "I love you Dad." "I love you Lord." ""I love you Julie." "Bye Dad.

I am trying to add the Author Facebook tab to facebook - of course it isn't a tab now as I have timeline. Are there any new instruction? The ones I found don't appear to work. Since trying the books I have read on FB Goodreads have reverted to July.

message 412: by Wysteria (new)

Wysteria Nothing I do serene to work! Any idea on when this will be fixed?

message 413: by Judyta (new)

Judyta Szacillo This application is purely a mess. I like Goodreads a lot, I think you keep doing good work at most times, but the FB app is so bad that I practically cannot believe my eyes. Updates appear randomly, so do the yearly and monthly numbers, the covers make no sense whatsoever and the titles are too often some exotic translations that I have never seen in my life before. I don't understand the purpose of releasing something that bad and then never fixing it.

message 414: by Carol (new)

Carol Smith Ooh, noticed this morning that that GoodReads timeline box is now showing all my recent reviews (which is just about the only thing I permit to post to FB). No more false counts of authors most read. I think something has altered much for the better, guys! Is it too early to say yay and thanks to the GR gods and goddesses?

Gwen the Librarian My Goodreads app hasn't posted to my timeline the entire month of October. Is anyone else experiencing difficulties?

message 416: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie Gwen the Librarian wrote: "My Goodreads app hasn't posted to my timeline the entire month of October. Is anyone else experiencing difficulties?"

Mine does post to my timeline at all any longer and has not for a couple of months. I've given up on this app integration, and from my observations, so has Goodreads. Nothing from Goodreads posts on my newsfeed, and the only thing that posts on my timeline is a small update under recent activity if I finish/rate a book.

message 417: by Coffee&Books (new)

Coffee&Books A year later and this still doesn't seem to work. Does anyone have an addin that works? I miss the old way of sharing my books and reviews with people.

message 418: by Chris (last edited Jan 26, 2013 11:13AM) (new)

Chris Just like Facebook itself, if GR is doing any actual user improvements they are certainly hard to notice. My frustration with GR's lack of respect for the user's "data" (number of books read, exact edition read, librarian-entered data, etc.) is reaching the breaking point. Unfortunately, there is little alternative: all the social media reading sites suck. Maybe it's time to face up to the challenge of creating my own, if only to have a convenient online site where I can record what I read and what I collect -- even if no one else ever signs up. The challenge is not the technology, rather its the need to make money. Remove that and you can reach the stars!

message 419: by Kay (new)

Kay I'm frustrated with lots of things that are hard to find or not very elegant on GR, but most of all with the inability to get selected reviews of mine to post on Facebook. Oh well.....I'll keep using GR as a record of my own reading and for the 2 friends who joined and thus read my reviews.

message 420: by Chris (new)

Chris Kay, I wanted to "like" your comment above, but, alas, there is no "like" option.

message 421: by Kay (new)

Kay Just one more frustration, Chris--we can "like" book reviews, but not comments! Ah...

Gwen the Librarian I have reloaded the app several times and it still doesn't work, though I do see it working for some other people on Facebook.

message 423: by Φειδίας (new)

Φειδίας Μπουρλάς Goodreads posted for last time to my Facebook timeline on Apr 12, 2013. Since then, nothing. I've disconnected & reconnected the accounts, logged-out & logged-in, nothing. What can I do? My Facebook Goodreads section contains only half of my books (it's not updated since then). Is it possible to refresh it?

message 424: by Chase (new)

Chase DuBois Φειδίας wrote: "Goodreads posted for last time to my Facebook timeline on Apr 12, 2013. Since then, nothing. I've disconnected & reconnected the accounts, logged-out & logged-in, nothing. What can I do?..."

Everything about your account looks like it's in order now. It's possible that the connection between your GR and FB accounts expired; re-connecting it, as you did, should fix it. Have you taken any action on the site since re-connecting to FB that should generate a post on Facebook? If not, please try doing so (shelving a book, marking one as WTR, etc. -- anything you've opted into) and see if it works now.

If it works, you can visit this page to import your missing activity.

If it doesn't work, let me know.

message 425: by Jen (new)

Jen I have tried everything but can't get the goodreads box to appear on my timeline. Goodreads will post when i begin a new book, but doesn't have the box that counts the books you have read, books you want to read, and what you are currently reading, etc. (like the graphic above)- Does anybody have any tips on how to do this?

message 426: by Chase (new)

Chase DuBois Jennifer wrote: "I have tried everything but can't get the goodreads box to appear on my timeline. Goodreads will post when i begin a new book, but doesn't have the box that counts the books you have read, books y..."

Hi Jennifer -- this blog post is a year and a half old, and in that time Facebook has made many changes to their platform. Unfortunately, the feature that allowed Goodreads-specific book counts and book collections has been removed. We hear you and we'd love to have this feature back, but in the meantime you should be able to sort-of see the book collections aspect of it by visiting https://www.facebook.com/me/books

message 427: by Jen (new)

Jen Thanks for letting me know!

message 428: by Gary (new)

Gary Anderson Goodreads updates to my Facebook Timeline worked perfectly for about a year. Suddenly, it's not working. Says I haven't logged in for several days when I've definitely done so, and it hasn't the posted the last several books I read. Whatever.

message 429: by Anna (new)

Anna I am trying to do this to see what it will look like... Have tried twice already and get the message that it has been submitted to my timeline, but nothing shows up anywhere in facebook.

message 430: by Jessie (new)

Jessie How can I change my settings so Goodreads doesn't post to Facebook on default? Since it's almost a hidden feature (the facebook icon doesn't stand out at all) I always forget and its a hassle to delete everything from Facebook everytime. I checked settings but unfortunately there's nothing there to disable this annoying behaviour. Even if it's not available through the settings it would help if Goodreads remembered you disabled the Facebook sharing option last time...

message 431: by Betty (new)

Betty I don't want my books or reviews to appear on my FB page, if I can't stop this I will leave Goodreads.

message 432: by Cătălina (new)

Cătălina How can I share my books on a facebook page (not my profile)?

Maureen Evans How do I stop Facebook displaying the books I have read?

message 434: by Gary (new)

Gary Anderson Wendy wrote: "I don't want my books or reviews to appear on my FB page, if I can't stop this I will leave Goodreads."
When I rate or review a book, I see little Facebook or Twitter icons that can be unchecked.

message 436: by Shaik (new)

Shaik Hayath Did you know that you can get paid to do simple jobs on Facebook?

There are thousands of businesses around the world and in your local area looking to hire people just like you to work on simple tasks such as:

Posting Facebook comments
Moderating Facebook groups
Uploading photos and tagging people
Generating Facebook ‘likes’ and followers
Most of these jobs don’t require any prior experience and the only skills you need are a good knowledge of how to use Facebook.
