Swoon Season: New Romantasy & Paranormal Romances for Fall

Posted by Sharon on August 17, 2026

In speculative fiction, demarcation lines tend to get pretty blurry. And that’s a good thing! Sorting fiction into genre piles is a kind of necessary, after-the-fact, taxonomic evil. Stories, on the other hand—they just want to be free.

It gets even trickier with a hybrid category tag like romantasy. So we’ve opted to go with an “everything in the pot” approach to this romantasy edition of our Fall Preview guide. Below, we’ve gathered up the season’s most anticipated titles in traditional romantasy, but have also folded in variants like paranormal romance, supernatural romance, dystopian romance, and interesting variations. Celestial romance, for instance. These books publish between the end of August and December in the U.S.

Some highlights: Sarah J. Maas’ pioneering A Court of Thorns and Roses series returns on October 27 with book six. Also look for new series installments from Rachel Gillig’s The Stonewater Kingdom saga and T. Kingfisher’s cozy Swordheart series. Sift carefully and you might even spot a new little something in short story collection form from Rebecca Yarros and her Empyrean series.

Broad readers of romance may also spot some authors making lateral moves. Laurie Gilmore (The Pumpkin Spice Café) wanders into the paranormal romance aisle with Big Bad Wolf, coming in September. And contemporary romance veteran Tessa Bailey introduces some dystopian time-travel mischief in her latest, Broken Rival (also due in September).

Browse around below and you’ll find all sorts of romantasy variations coming this fall. Magical speakeasies in 1920s London. Alien couples therapy. The Pied Piper legend. Still haven’t found what you’re looking for? It might be in our fall fantasy and sci-fi preview. Again, the genre boundaries are tricksy.
