72 Reader-Approved Audiobooks for Every Bookish Mood

Here at Goodreads World HQ, we’re always experimenting with new and interesting ways to sort, select, and recommend titles from the vast rolling plains of fiction and nonfiction titles. And so, for our latest roundup of audiobook recommendations, we are taking a new approach.
We’ve crunched the numbers to compare popular titles on Goodreads with new and trending audiobooks from the digital realm at large: the online charts from Audible—both bestsellers and newly trending titles—plus the recent winners of the prestigious Audie Awards. We then used that blend of information to curate the following list of recommendations, genre-sorted by the Goodreads editorial team with an eye toward variety and balance.
Of course, when it comes to audiobooks, narrators matter! Many of the audiobooks with the longest shelf life feature popular, experienced, and award-winning narrators. It’s an art, it truly is. Interestingly, in nonfiction and memoirs, readers definitely prefer titles narrated by the author, which makes total sense. An example might be David Sedaris, who is really the only guy who can read David Sedaris stories properly.
Some other notes: Full-cast audiobooks are given their own category here, as this immersive format continues to expand and evolve. Within individual genre collections—romance, horror, mystery & thriller—you’ll find a mix of current bestsellers and perennially popular backlist titles. We’ve also dropped in a category for Classics, books that have stood the test of time and evolving media formats. Some of these are flat-out mandatory audio literature experiences. We don’t like to play favorites, but sometimes we do.
