2026’s Dark Academia and Campus Novels to Get You into the Back-to-School Spirit

Back-to-school season has arrived! To mark the occasion, we’ve put together the following collection of new and forthcoming books this year that feature campus novels, dark academia, and school-adjacent stories and characters. Consider this the class of 2026, book edition.
 
Some interesting bits: Several of the high-profile literary titles from this year involve academic elements. Partita, the latest from Pulitzer Prize winner Barbara Kingsolver (Demon Copperhead), centers on one woman’s experience at a prominent music conservatory. Tayari Jones’ Kin documents the extraordinary friendship between two women, one of whom attends Atlanta’s Spelman College—America’s oldest historically Black college for women.
 
Elizabeth Strout’s new novel, The Things We Never Say, ponders our national malaise through the story of a beloved high school history teacher. In fact, Strout’s novel is already on this year’s longlist for the prestigious Booker Prize, along with two other titles in this collection: Luke Kennard’s twisted campus novel Black Bag and Missouri Williams’ academia fever dream, The Vivisectors. Seems like the Booker jury’s got school on the mind.
