Summer is a season to be savored. It feels so good, and it goes so fast.
 
But take heart, bookworms! Summer’s not over yet! As a kind of in-the-moment celebration of everyone’s favorite season, we’ve gathered here a collection of brand-new books for impulsive, spontaneous summer reading. All of the books selected below are new to shelves, published (in the U.S.) in June and July. We’ve sorted the stacks by genre, and each category includes a mix of popular and highly rated titles, per Goodreads members.
 
Some highlights: Readers are loving Whistler, the new novel from veteran author Ann Patchett, which illustrates two great human truisms: (A) People need people, and (B) some moments can change the whole trajectory of your life.
 
Another book getting serious traction this summer is Ben Reeves’ debut novel, Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt. Readers are championing the book the old-fashioned way—word-of-mouth recommendations—and also advising newcomers to avoid story spoilers at all costs. This may very well be the sleeper hit of the summer.
 
Adventurous science fiction readers will want to check out The Sixth Nik, the latest from Daniel Kraus, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of last year’s Angel Down. The fantasy shelves feature some particularly compelling book titles this summer, including Fishbone Cinderella, Field Guide for the Formerly Villainous, and John Wiswell’s intriguing cozy The Dragon Has Some Complaints.
