Vote Now in the Opening Round! »

We want to know which books you loved from 2011. Choose the year's best books in our 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards, the only major book awards decided entirely by readers. Select your favorites in 22 categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Mystery & Thriller, Memoir & Autobiography, Young Adult Fantasy, and many more! Will Tina Fey's Bossypants win Favorite Book of 2011? Who has more steam—Jodi Picoult or Haruki Murakami? Will the Steve Jobs biography be a late-breaking contender? Grab a seat ringside, because it's going to be a battle until the polls close November 30!

We analyzed statistics from the 87 million books added, rated, and reviewed on the site in 2011 to list 15 books in 22 categories—that's 330 nominations. We did not consult a panel of experts or form a secret committee of publishing insiders. Readers know what's good and what's great. These nominations are based on a book's number of ratings and average rating as pegged by the more than 6 million readers on Goodreads. To emphasize reader's choice even more, the opening round also accepts write-in votes. So you can vote for any 2011 book published before November 30 (December books will be eligible next year).

You have three chances to vote. The opening round lasts until November 13. Vote now to make sure your favorite books make it into the semifinals.

On November 14, the top 5 write-in votes in each category become official nominees, bringing the total to 20 nominees in each category and you have a second opportunity to cast your vote.

The final elimination round launches November 21. We will narrow the field to the top 10 books in each category, and you will have one last chance to vote. Final voting closes November 30, and winners will be announced in December.

Now's your chance! Vote for the best books of 2011! »

Lindsey I would like to be able to read Diary of a Whimpy Kid Cabin Fever but it comes out Nov 15 and the first round will already be closed. In the future can Goodreads hold their awards in December or even January?

I think you mean Douglas Adams as the author of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" ;) But agreed, I enjoyed it.

The accuser failed to mention that it's just fanfiction she's talking about. Back when Clare was a teen and before she got published, she was semi-internet famous in the fandom community for writing really good Harry Potter fanfiction. She wrote in a few lines that were very familiar to some things in popular books, and people got really upset over it. She deleted her fanfiction before she got published.

I don't think her published works should be judged based on a possible mistake she made as a teen when writing fanfiction. But people seemed to get even more upset with her and her fanfiction after she got published...

Edit: At least I thought she was a teen at the time, but I just looked up her age and she might not have been. But still... It's just fanfiction.

Apologies for being off topic, but this is something I wanted to address.

To clarify something, you can still be cited with plagiarism legally if you don't properly cite your sources/credits in fanfiction, or ask due permission. So it's not JUST fanfiction on a legal note - you have to be careful not to plagiarize in anything that you write in public consumption, and give careful attention to credit where credit is due. Otherwise, it could lead to your work being blocked, banned, or pursuits in legal action, though I think it's rare. It's a serious matter, and one not to be taken lightly.

Technically, fanfiction does classify as fair use as long as sources are properly cited, but you do have to check to see that you're not violating any rights on behalf of the work/author/publisher.

I thought I'd add two cents on it because I don't think people realize that plagiarizing in any capacity is wrong and carries legal weight (and hence why the accusation mentioned above carries such a serious undertone, whether it's attributed toward a published or unpublished author.)

On topic: I agree that there are some titles I would've liked to see in the Goodreads consideration for November and December for this poll that I've had highly anticipated on my "to-read" list. Does that mean the ones that weren't considered in the timeline for this poll will be included for the one next year?
