Discover 96 Great Short Story Collections from the Past Three Years

We’ll keep this short: Today’s collection is aimed at those of us who have developed a regular short fiction habit—or those who are curious about it.
Aside from the literary delights of the form, there are good practical reasons to make room for short fiction in your reading schedule. It’s a great way to sample new authors in small batches. Also, a session of short story reading can work as a kind of palate cleanser between longer books, giving you time to power up your attention span again.
We’ve collected below 96 short story collections published in the U.S. in the past three years. These are single-author short story collections, as opposed to anthologies, and many of them feature variations on the form. You’ll find lots of interconnected short story collections (Ben Shattuck’s The History of Sound, say) or books designed to be “a-novel-in-stories” (Tony Tulathimutte’s Rejection). Also look for collections from some marquee authors here, including Margaret Atwood, Jonathan Lethem, and Salman Rushdie.
Genre fans will find some real treasures here, too. In fantasy, the short stories of Naomi Novik and Kelly Link are justifiably famous in certain circles. Short fiction is also probably the best place to find literary horror from around the world, like Samanta Schweblin’s Good and Evil and Other Stories. Bora Chung delivers some state-of-the-art Korean sci-fi with Your Utopia.
The collection below is in reverse chronological order by publication year, roughly, starting with 2025 collections toward the top.
