Readers' 88 Favorite Romantasy Books of the Past Three Years

Romantasy is the consensus term for the wildly popular genre-crash of romance and fantasy. Good call, too. Fantance sounds ridiculous.
But perhaps you’re curious: What are the most popular romantasy books and series currently in circulation? We were curious, too. So we checked the numbers and collected below the most popular romantasy novels of the past three years, according to Goodreads members’ Read, Currently Reading, and Want to Read shelves. In addition, each of the books below has received an average 3.5-star rating or better.
Rebecca Yarros’ breakthrough Empyrean series continues to hold the top three slots with Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm. It’s also interesting to note that romantasy readers are quick to embrace independent and self-published authors. Many of these books and series generated so much initial buzz that they were quickly snatched up by traditional publishers, like Sarah A. Parker’s When the Moon Hatched or Callie Hart’s Quicksilver.
The genre is an expansive one, too. For instance, if you like your romantasy a little cozier, try Charlie N. Holmberg’s Keeper of Enchanted Rooms or Sangu Mandanna’s The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. Browse around a bit and you’ll find other interesting variations, from dark humor to gothic vibes, meta playfulness to really dark academia.
