68 New Books to Read for Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month in the U.S. In honor of the ongoing celebrations, we’ve collected below several dozen new and recent books by Native American and Indigenous Canadian authors. The titles listed have all been published within the past five years and cut across multiple genres, both fiction and nonfiction.
There are some fascinating books on the list this year and plenty of options to choose from. A few highlights, in no particular order: Author Amanda Peters’ debut novel, The Berry Pickers, follows the story of a Mi’kmaq family who immigrate from Nova Scotia to Maine in 1962. Peters’ tragic historical mystery has been a genuine sensation among Goodreads regulars—be sure to check out the community reviews.
The Mighty Red, meanwhile, is the latest novel from Pulitzer Prize–winning author Louise Erdrich. Set in rural North Dakota, the novel explores ambitious themes concerning time, tragedy, the power of love, and our faltering stewardship of planet Earth. From the nonfiction aisle, Deborah Jackson Taffa’s memoir Whiskey Tender is already one of the year’s most celebrated publications and a National Book Award finalist.
Click around and you’ll find plenty of other options in mystery, fantasy, historical fiction, horror, romance, short stories, and YA graphic novels.
