2024's Campus Novels and Dark Academia for Back-to-School Season

Posted by Sharon on August 2, 2024

Back-to-school season prompts different emotional reactions, depending on your perspective. Typically, it’s depressing for students, exciting for parents, and pure gloom for educators watching the last moments of their summer vacation tick away.

In the spirit of back-to-school reading, we’ve assembled this collection of new novels set on the school campus: high school, college, extradimensional, what-have-you. Each of the titles here is a 2024 release, either on shelves now or coming soon. You’ll find literary fiction, historical fiction, lighthearted mysteries, and dark academia—lots of dark academia, actually.

Some highlights: Karla Cornejo Villavicencio’s new novel, Catalina, follows a graduating Harvard senior, raised by her undocumented grandparents, as she navigates internships, secret societies, and one very complicated romance.

On the spookier side of things, author M.L. Rio (If We Were Villains) is back on shelves in September with Graveyard Shift, a gothic-tinged horror novella concerning a group of late-working strangers and one fateful night in the old college cemetery.

For something a little different, check out Elise Bryant’s It’s Elementary, a witty cozy mystery set in and around a California grade school where the principal has just gone missing. PTA dustups! Workplace flirting! Suspicious minivans!

Click on the book cover images for more information about each title, and add anything that looks promising to your Want to Read shelf.

Law The Teacher was disappointing. I enjoyed This Time It's Real, though. Is I Hope This Doesn't Find You any good? Surprised Babel isn't on here.

Law Hannah Grace is an underwhelming author for me. I gave Icebreaker and Wildfire one star. I'd skip Daydream then.

Law Anita de Monte Laughs Last is shrouded in controversy and Come and Get It was disappointing. It had low ratings. Can you recommend me a book to read from this list?
