Groups support in the iPhone app!

Posted by Ettore Pasquini on February 28, 2011
By popular request... we added support for groups inside our iPhone app! It's available since version 1.2.

You can see your groups and your friends' groups by going to your profile page. From there it's pretty self-explanatory. Each group will display the description, some details and statistics, and of course the discussions boards, with all the topics grouped by folder. There's also an "Unread Topics" folder which groups (you guessed it) all the unread discussions in that group.

The topic page shows all the related comments as well as the ability to add new comments.

You can also create a new topic by tapping on the white "+" button on the top right of the folder page, and copy the topic URL in case you need to reference it. (E.g. in an email or any other document.)

We hope you enjoy this new widely requested feature... Let us know what you think!

UPDATE: to users on older devices with iOS 3, please update to version 1.2.1 to fix the crash issues that affected the 1.2 release.

Ah, I see, thanks rivka. I still think having a button for this function on the Scanned Books page is useful to not many users, but maybe I'm wrong.

My thinking is that this option probably belongs to the book page, although the disadvantage would be that you add one book at a time to the group.

You got it right. The basic idea would be that you could add books to a group directly from the app, and from your own shelves. This would make it a lot easier, and hence more useful for classrooms, companies etc. to use the group functionality in goodreads.

Basically the suggestion is to:
1. add scanned books directly to a group (if admin or group open)
2. add books from shelves to a group (if admin or group open)

It's driving me crazy to reach the last page of an enormous thread of thousands of posts, just to see what the group is discussing!!!..."

Is this going to happen? I recently got an ipod touch and love the app but hate trying to get to the last posts for long threads. I have been clicking on the arrow to reverse the order so that the new ones move to the top, but that seems to get rid of the red "New" next to the new ones (I guess because I am reloading the page? This happens if I have to scroll way down multiple pages too). Then I have to try to figure out where I left off without it telling me. 90% of what I do on goodreads is read group posts so this is huge for me.

Ettore Pasquini Julie, the sort arrow would be the way to do that. The "new" label is probably lost during the page reload, I'll file a ticket to fix that.

Julie Thanks! As long as the red "New" notes stay, it would be ok.

Amy This thread is so old. I just downloaded the app and it still seems to be missing major group functionality.

Is there a way for the app to access the read and to-read books lists in a group yet? And is there a way to add books to a group list in the app yet? Thanks!

Jessica Exactly Amy! Also the events - so we could actually use it related to bookclub meetings as well
