Stephen Vikram Seth's A Suitable Boy. Set in newly independent India, this book captures the nation's complex and competing cultures in a great story of family hopes, prejudices, love and triumphs.

I am glad that someone else remembers James Michener. I spent many hours on the NYC subway reading his books.

Cindy I agree with Virginia. Michener's books are very long. Just finished The Source. It was absolutely fantastic!

Jane I'm surprised to find that I've read 12 of these, although I didn't really see myself as a doorstopper person. Nice mix of old and new. No Wolf Hall? A doorstopper if ever I saw one, and the third volume of the trilogy more so, "The Mirror and the Light".
