105 of the Buzziest Debut Novels of the New Year

For dedicated readers, the new year brings the opportunity to discover new writers. It’s one of the underrated pleasures of a serious book habit. And when you find a new author you really like, it’s your duty as a literate citizen to spread the word. Tell your friends, your family, the cute guy at the coffee shop, whatever.
We’ve sorted through the stacks to produce this month-by-month list of some of the buzziest debuts of the new year. We’re staying out of young adult on this one, though you will find plenty of SFF, mystery, and horror in the mix. There’s a veritable library of interesting leads here, not to mention an inordinate number of extremely cool-looking book covers.
Some highlights and places to start, in no particular order: The dystopian SF novel Chain Gang All Stars is getting a lot of attention for its wild premise and not-so-subtle indictment of the U.S. prison system. Author D.K. Nnuro profiles two Ghanaian siblings in America with What Napoleon Could Not Do. Daisy Alpert Florin’s My Last Innocent Year is a coming-of-age story set in those strange final days of the 20th century.
Also in the mix: extremely relevant historical fiction, World War II heartbreak, Black doomsday preppers, and interdimensional dating apps. It’s an adventure, all right. Dig in and add the books that pique your interest to your Want to Read shelf!
