The Most Popular Horror Books of 2022 (So Far)

A good scary story is an oddly appealing experience. There’s something about the subtle chills of the ghost story—or the cathartic thrills of the slasher—that hits us right in the brain stem. Fear shouldn't be fun, yet sometimes it really is.
We’ve collected below the most popular horror novels of 2022 so far, as determined by early reviews and the books that Goodreads members are putting on their Want to Read shelves. Genre regulars will note that old-school Gothic creepiness is enjoying an enormous renaissance of late, with authors like Isabel Cañas (The Hacienda) riffing on classic themes.
We're also seeing new conceptual genre forays into social horror, historical horror, and YA horror from authors such as Bethany C. Morrow, Alma Katsu, and Andrew Joseph White. Readers should also watch for some sinister lateral thinking from indie rock veteran John Darnielle (Devil House) and another guy you probably know.
Scroll over the covers to learn more about each book, and be sure to add the books that pique your interest to your Want to Read shelf!

Hell Followed With Us is truly a terrifying read in how close it feels to prophesy. If you have religious trauma and/or have to deal with deadnaming / transphobes this might be particularly rough for you.

I've only read one of these so far--need to move some from my TBR list to my MP3 player and e-reader immediately, because I know the rest of the year has good stuff coming, too! Like another T Kingfisher title next month. Thanks for adding a horror article!
I really liked Devil House, but I think anyone going into it looking for "Horror" is going to be disappointed. Expect meta-fictional criticism of the true crime genre instead.

Thanks for the rec!
I loved Dead Silence, but I am really excited to see A Black and Endless Sky on this list. It was incredible and brutal.
Thank you so much for the list. The Horror community is infinite and ever growing, and we are sure glad to see this genre get the much deserved recognition!!
Thanks so much for sharing this list, daniella!! Horror happens to be one of my absolute favorite genres!! Do you have any favorite horror books to recommend?
