New Historical Fiction By Time Period

Posted by Cybil on April 14, 2022

For those of us with a thing about history, there’s a real time-travel element to good historical fiction. Traditional educational models stress a nonfiction/scholarly approach to the past, which is great, and in recent years there’s been a quite incredible explosion of quality online documentaries and history podcasts.

But for that thrilling time-travel sensation, nothing can beat an absorbing historical fiction novel. In our never-ending quest to find useful sorting strategies, we’ve collected below several dozen new historical fiction novels—published since 2021—with the fictional settings arranged by time period. We’ve also adjusted the focus to cover relatively recent history, from the 1800s to 1970s or so.

Throw in the various genre styles available, and there’s a wide variety of reading fun to be had: Supernatural suspense in the aftermath of the 19th century Mexican War of Independence. A triumph of courage in 1970s post-segregation Alabama. Or maybe some early-1900s literary conjecture bouncing off of a completely different classic American novel.

Scroll over the book covers to learn more about each novel and be sure to add the books that pique your interest to your Want to Read shelf!

Susan So many great new historical fiction books this year. I had the opportunity to read an advanced copy of The Lunar Housewife, by Caroline Woods and it is amazing. 1950s.

Penney Helms I love historical mysteries and added a number of these to my "want to read". Would also love list in Tudor Age.

Joanne Murphy Vagabond Quakers by Olga R. Morrill. That is volume one. She has a second volume out and is working on a third of her trilogy. Series starts in June 1662. Very eye opening of history of Quakers arriving to NH. Historic story approach to settlements and families. I am enjoying reading this first volume.

Mark Scheel For a great historical sixties read, check out The Potter's Wheel by Mark Scheel. Very accurate portrayal of the Hollywood street scene in 1967 and of a coming-of-age character.

Thomas Greenbank GOLD! takes place between 1975 and 2005. GOLD!
This was relatively easy as I can still remember the era. Book 2—as yet untitled—spans 1939-mid-60s. Much more research required.
