New Feature: Publish to Blog

Posted by Louise on July 7, 2010
Good news, WordPress users, you now have the ability to automatically publish your Goodreads review to your blog. This saves you valuable time since you no longer have to copy your review, log into your blog, and then paste it.

Step 1: update your blog settings page with your login credentials.

Step 2: write a review or edit an existing one.

Step 3: check the 'post to blog' box at the bottom of the review form.

Step 4: admire your automatically published post on your blog.

Robert I have filled out the required information. When I add a review, I do not have "post to blog" as an option.

message 2: by Louise (new)

Louise Oops, that's a bug. I've put in a fix for it, which means you should be able to see "post to blog" after the next release. Tomorrow!

message 3: by Robert (new)

Robert I saw elsewhere that this is because I do not have Twitter or FB enabled. I enabled Twitter and all worked as expected. Thank you.

I did have my FB stuff in there, but I had disabled it.

message 4: by Liam (new)

Liam Littleton Awesome, but now how about something for us Blogger users? We're feeling kinda left out :(

message 5: by Gina (new)

Gina Fantastic and fabulous! When I post reviews, I do so here first, then my blogs, on Chapters, both Amazon sites and B&N. This will save me so much time! Thank you!

message 6: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer It would be great to see this for other blogging platforms, like Moveable Type...

message 7: by Sue (new)

Sue Here's another vote for Blogger.

message 8: by Ze2red (new)

Ze2red i would love to see this for blogger too.

message 9: by Louise (new)

Louise Great news, I added blogger support. Just use the pulldown menu in the blog settings page and select blogger.

message 10: by Cherish (new)

Cherish Best news I've heard all day! Thanks

message 11: by Christian (new)

Christian Brumm Awesome, will try the feature with my next post.

Side question: Is there a way to post old reviews to your blog? (get to the html/script of an old review that is)

Thanks! :)

message 12: by Louise (new)

Louise Christian, once you set up the post to blog feature, you can just go to the 'edit' link of any of your old reviews and click on the "post to blog" checkbox on the bottom and hit 'save' and it will post it automatically to the blog. If you just want to see the html of the review, just go to the 'show' page of that review and on the right side you should see a "blog this review" text box with some text you can copy/paste.

message 13: by Christian (new)

Christian Brumm Perfect! Thanks so much!

message 14: by Louise (new)

Louise Lluvia, could it be that the blogs got saved as a draft?

message 15: by John (new)

John Martin I'm sorry, but this isn't working at all.

I can't even give goodreads my blogger login info. When I choose blogger as the service I'm using, the login and password fields disappear.

Hoping we can get some clarification on how to automatically post our reviews to blogger.

Thanks!

message 16: by Ana (new)

Ana Mardoll I have Blogger, and I can't seem to get this to work.

I set the blog type to blogger, and found the url just fine. User name, I'm not sure about - I've tried with 'anamardoll' and 'anamardoll@gmail.com'. I've checked "publish to draft".

When I write a review on GoodReads, I check the "publish to blog" box, but nothing happens on my blog. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

message 17: by Creeva (new)

Creeva Everytime I attempt to add a wordpress site I get "post URL can not be blank" - it isn't - but it does blank out when I get that error message.

I have tried multiple wordpress installs that I have - and I have tried with and without the http:// - any ideas?

message 18: by Louise (new)

Louise Creeva, I'll take a look at this and let you know. Thanks for reporting it.

message 19: by Louise (new)

Louise Creeva, I've fixed it. It should be working in the next release.

John, if you're using this with blogger, you should just need to authorize with blogger with the link. Then it will bring you back to the blog setup page, where you can follow the directions below on the page to put in your post url.

message 20: by Creeva (new)

Creeva Thanks Louise - I think I did it a couple dozen times from two computers - and I thought I was nuts.

Thank you for restoring the sanity in myself.....for the moment

message 21: by Ana (new)

Ana Mardoll Louise, if you don't mind my asking, are there plans to add "publish as draft" to the blogger option?

That exists currently for wordpress, but disappears when you select blogger.

Thanks!

message 22: by Louise (new)

Louise Ana, it's not high on the priority list, but I'll keep it in mind for a fun friday.

message 23: by Ana (new)

Ana Mardoll Thank you, Louise, I appreciate it! :)

message 24: by Chad (new)

Chad Barnes My Wordpress blog homepage feed does not show the photo of the book unless I click the title of the post and go to that page. Any ideas?

Simple, type your blog URL in. So it should be example.wordpress.com
You can find this-this by going on Wordpress 'My Site(S) Clicking on the visit site button and copying the link!

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

But, it doesn't work for me. Simply, I click the option 'Post to blog' but NOTHING happens? NOTHING. No sign. And when I click the edit to the review, the box is unticked automatically? Heeeeeelp, please?

message 34: by Lou (new)

Lou Grimm Thanks Louise! I love it! Just wondering though - are the spoiler alerts working properly? I just used this new feature to post here: https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/5259... - and the spoilers aren't hidden.

message 35: by Colin (new)

Colin Marks one thing to watch out for is that the login to your blog must be uninterrupted. I added Google's reCAPTCHA plugin for extra security to login my screen, but this means that the goodreads posts then fail. As far as I know, you can't have both - either you get automatic blog post creation, or you have a captcha enabled. Hope that helps.

message 36: by Trisha (new)

Trisha I have added the wordpress information, and made sure that post to blog was checked. When I post a review it is still not going to my blog. I need to use my page URL correct?

message 37: by A.J. (new)

A.J. Reilly Sorry if I'm being ignorant, but my blog is hosted on Weebly, and I couldn't get it to update my latest review. I'm currently trying to build my author page (was just accepted as an author a couple weeks ago!) and this sort of thing would come in very handy. Please advise! Thanks

Colin Marks Tricia wrote: "I have added the wordpress information, and made sure that post to blog was checked. When I post a review it is still not going to my blog. I need to use my page URL correct?"

does the URL include "/xmlrpc.php" on the end? this is needed. also, try logging in manually with the credentials you gave to the goodreads settings.

message 39: by Trisha (new)

Trisha I finally figured it out. Ty

message 40: by Cathy (new)

Cathy I can't figure it out. Help! I entered my wordpress url and stuck /xmlrpc.php behind it. Is that right?

As log-in I entered my username.

It's not working, what am I doing wrong?

On the goodreads help about this it says I should go to my blog mainsite and view the source code. I have no idea how to do that or where to find it...

message 41: by Colin (new)

Colin Marks Morning all, I received an email today saying that the post-review-to-wordpress-blog ability was being removed as the integration is no longer compatible. It definitely is for me, I've been using this feature for the past five years without an issue... So, please don't remove it, it's really useful!!!

message 42: by Lou (new)

Lou Grimm Hello everyone - I also received the email saying post-to-wordpress has been discontinued.

I'm wondering how everyone's now posting to their blogs? The email said we could 'copy and paste' but it's not quite that simple. I'm going to have a look at setting up a template as an intermediary step but even that's laborious.

--Actually, cancel my comment. I figured out how to copy and paste properly - instead of pasting directly into my blog I have to paste into a text document first. Then it seems to work just fine!

It sucks now.

message 47: by Colin (last edited Sep 15, 2017 01:12AM) (new)

Colin Marks Yep, it's been removed - I can no longer post to wordpress - such a shame, as this was working absolutely fine (see http://colinmarks.com/ - all reviews except the last were posted automatically from here). If anyone from goodreads is reading this blog page, please please please, reinstall wordpress support - there was nothing wrong with it. I'll have to hand craft the reviews now which is time consuming...

message 48: by Morpa (new)

Morpa Sucks, this was working great, I just noticed they removed it. Are there any other platforms that are goodreads-like that supports this?

They've taken it off, Debra. You now have to copy the html details to the right and paste it into your html wordpress blog manually.
