September's Twisty New Mysteries and Thrillers

Posted by Cybil on September 20, 2021

As the summer comes to a close and the days grow shorter, it's natural that we're drawn to what hides in the shadows. Mystery stories are deeply rooted to the part of our brains that wants to turn the lights on, look closer, and uncover the secrets keeping themselves invisible.

Luckily for us readers, September is full of twisty mysteries and thrillers, featuring everything from a young psychopath's quest to solve a murder to a surprised heiress's search for the reasons behind her sudden fortune to a group of senior citizens' attempt to unmask a killer and find some stolen diamonds, too.

We put this collection of new and highly anticipated mysteries and thrillers together based on the amount of early buzz from Goodreads members, which we measure by the number of times each book has been added to Want to Read shelves and by factoring in star ratings—only books averaging 3.5 stars and above made it onto the list.

Perfect families are always instantly suspect. In this hotly anticipated release from Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty, Stan and Joy Delaney have it all—a prestigious tennis academy, the admiration of the community, and four successful children, now grown. But when a bleeding stranger appears on their doorstep begging for help and ends up disappearing along with Joy, there's only one suspect. And Stan has a lot of secrets for an innocent man.

In this 1960s heist story from Pulitzer Prize–winner Colson Whitehead, furniture dealer Ray Carney is caught between his life as a pillar of the community and a denizen of the criminal underworld of New York City. After a heist on a Harlem hotel goes sideways, Carney must walk a tightrope between his dual lives, and what hangs in the balance is his life, his reputation, and a lot of money.

Everyone's favorite septuagenarian crime-solving crew finds themselves in the middle of a bad situation involving old friends, hot diamonds, and a mobster who'll stop at nothing to get what he wants. The four sleuths take part in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a would-be assassin, and it's going to take all their wits for them to come out alive. But it's OK—they have a lot of free time anyway.

In the latest mystery from Lisa Jewell, bestselling author of Then She Was Gone, worlds collide as the cold case of a young woman's disappearance years before is blown wide open. Kim has spent two years processing the mysterious and tragic disappearance of her daughter, Tallulah, and it isn't until Sophie, a local woman, finds a note attached to a tree scrawled "DIG HERE" that they finally have the lead they need. Secrets will be revealed, past trauma will be reckoned with, and nothing will remain unchanged.

When Mary returns to her hometown after being unceremoniously booted at the beginning of her senior year from an Ivy League university, all she wants is to disappear and be left alone. But that changes when her universally beloved (but secretly vicious) childhood friend Olivia goes missing, along with a 19-year-old girl. Nobody sees the connection between the two, but Mary does. And she's going to get to the bottom of it.

Alice Feeney (Sometimes I Lie) brings us a story of marriage, alienation, and the cost of lies. Adam and Amelia Wright have a lot of history between them, and even more secrets—ten years of marriage is a long time to collect them. When they win a free weekend vacation in Scotland through mysterious circumstances, it promises to be the getaway they need to tug their relationship off the rocks. But it turns out that deadly secrets can follow you all the way across international waters.

In this claustrophobic debut thriller from Amanda Jayatissa, Paloma, who was adopted by an American family from a Sri Lankan orphanage, offers her Bay Area apartment as a place to stay to Arun, a recent immigrant himself. But when Arun discovers a dark secret tied to her past in Sri Lanka, he's found murdered, and Paloma finds herself stuck in a web of blood, mystery, and terror.

In the latest installment in the hit young adult series The Inheritance Games, Avery Grambs doesn't have the foggiest idea why Tobias Hawthorne chose her as the heiress to his obscene fortune, but now that he has, a maelstrom of family secrets and deadly intrigue has followed with it. Avery must delve into her own, non-Hawthorne family history to discover the truth, all the while navigating the influence of Jameson and Grayson, the charming and mysterious Hawthorne grandsons.

It's not easy being a psychopath with murderous aspirations when a murder happens near you that you didn't even do. Chloe Sevre, a college freshman, is one of seven psychopaths taking part in a clinical study focused on their, ah, unique brain chemistries. When one of her fellow subjects gets murdered, Chloe will have to use her significantly off-kilter perspective to unmask the killer before it's too late.

When NYU freshman Claudia Castro goes missing after the events of an ill-fated drunken night, her friends and family dig desperately in search of the truth. As they piece together the series of events leading up to her sudden disappearance, they discover a picture of unbelievable trauma, obsession, and secrets that scream to be let out into the light of day.

I was thinking, ho hum ho hum. Then, I saw your comment about his last book being hilarious. Now I've got to try out this author.

message 15: by Tiana (new)

Tiana Hadnt The only one I’m interested in is Richard Osman. How about some actual mysteries and not so many thrillers. And how about a list with something on it other than the bog box names? There’s nothing on this list, except Richard Osman, that isn’t the most buzzed/talked about/pushed book of the season. It gets boring.

message 16: by Tiana (new)

Tiana Hadnt Big box names, not bog box names.....

message 17: by Elentarri (new)

Elentarri Bog box is probably more accurate? ;) The covers are hideous.

Vince Flynn is sadly dead. Who is continuing his series? A particularly morbid, if not original practice.
