The Witches is great! One of my favourite childhood books! I've seen A Monster Calls (Movie). Still want to get my hands on the ebook. Thanks for the selection!

How is Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, by Alvin Schwartz not on this list!! This book is such a memorable piece of my childhood and defined horror for me. Aren't others still reading this?Guillermo del Toro is even making the movie adaption.
how young readers exactly? Skulduggery Pleasant is an aweesome series, but it does get rather violent and gory...

Angrboda wrote: "how young readers exactly? Skulduggery Pleasant is an aweesome series, but it does get rather violent and gory..."I read them in the car with my 5 year old brother and 9 year old sister and they loved it.
Lockwood and Co series by Johnathan Stroud! It is prettt spooky though. I wouldn’t recommend it to 8 year olds. But to pre-teens, yes!
Jessie, really? Even the later ones? Already around book 5-ish or so I started to find them a wee bit too close to my limit, and I'm nearly 40! I saw Derek Landry wrote in one of his blog posts once that he was deliberately trying to emphasise the violence somewhat, especially in the last few books, so as to not accidentally downplay the consequences of it or how dangerous what Valkyrie was doing was. Or some such. And also to make the readers start questioning Valkyrie as a person, because she does become a somewhat questionable character later on, as she becomes affected by the life she's been leading.
The Last Apprentice/The Wardstone Chronicles series! Creepy horro r and interesting. I don't really like scary stuff but this series is great!
Flora wrote: "Is The Night Gardner an interesting book? Name is quite scary"I read it and found it not very scary. It is interesting, but didn't live up to the intriguing cover and title, in my opinion. Its plot had potential, but there were missed opportunities for suspense and overall value. All in all, sure, give it a try. I think there are more satisfying reads out there.
Sleepy wrote: "Finally Skulduggery Pleasant is getting the fame it deserves best series of all time hands down!"Totally agree. LOVE that series - why is it so hard to find in the US, especially in ebook/Kindle format?!

Yes!! This series is amazing! And terrifying!! Not sure how well an audiobook would work as half the creepiness (maybe more) comes from the artwork.

Its newly out in the US unfortunatly... its been out in UK nd Ireland for 10+ years already. Like come on US you gotta catch up with the times.
"The Skeleton Man," by Joseph Bruchac is a great scary book for young readers. It's also nice to have some diversity from the usual assortment of ghosts and vampires.
You should definitely include Jonathan Stroud’s Lockwood and Co. They are frightful but very fun. Like Percy jackson meets the exorcist, but still on a young adult level.
