Bjorn Klein grew up in the disturbingly idyllic woods of the former Kingdom of Bavaria, where childhood was so outrageously normal it practically demanded rebellion. Books, music, writing, and an overactive imagination became early accomplices. A habit of asking inconvenient questions followed. Reality has been negotiable ever since.

He studied music, literature, and education in Cologne, which mostly taught him that institutions are strange creatures and should never be left unsupervised. Working on and off as a researcher in the theory and history of popular music, he eventually turned that obsession into his debut book, Turn Up The Bass (2017), an exploration of DJ and dance music culture in New York from the late 1960s through the 1980s—
