That snatch of beauty
on the near-perpendicular slope—
we climbed so high for it—
the chorus of lupine and alpine roses,
the peaks’ white silence piercing
the birdsong blue of sky,
then—look out—
the dazzling green plunge of valley,
the lake a thousand feet below:

that’s when Heaven shows itself
in that single instant as we turn away
scurrying down the safer trail
