Recent Reads: Little House books
I bought the Little House series (the proper edition, illustrated by Garth Williams) for Young Indiana last year for Christmas, thinking that sometime in the next year or so he might be about ready to start having them read to him. A few months ago he got LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, brought it to me, and said, “Maybe we could read this book! It has a FEW pictures!”
I told him we had to start with LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BIG WOODS, but that I would love to read them to him. So he went and got BIG...

I have read and re-read these books so very often. I didn't read Farmer Boy until after all the "Laura" books - Almanzo as a boy becomes real after one meets him as Laura's beau, and his various comments to her help make Farmer Boy much more interesting (at least to me). Wonderful, educational series.

I don't remember exactly when I first read FARMER BOY, but I suspect strongly that I read it at a similar time. They remain wonderful books. <3 :)
I've been reading them aloud to my husband and newborn son, as my hubby had never read them. We're currently on The Long Winter(#6). I feel the same as you regarding the "Indian" scenes. I think it's better that the scenes remain and us adults be responsible for explaining the situation, context and how even good people can have bad aspects, like these prejudices, rather than slicing out the scenes altogether. Erasing these things doesn't make them not have happened, and it's important for kids to learn those lessons too.
