What's the single most important thing a book cover must do?

Don’t judge a book by its cover. As sayings go, it makes sense to me. I read books. I know they have covers. And I understand that by and large, the two of them might have something to do with one another…but not necessarily. Maybe the warning should be, “Don’t judge a book by its cover, unless that cover is successful.”

Marianne Boutet It is so good to read your comments on the importance of the cover to the book. I just finished a series wherein comments about all 7 of the books were "ignore the cover, this book is really good". Apparently the publisher controlled the covers - and dropped the author after the sixth book She self-published the last book (and made it available for free) - and the cover was TONS better. In essence, I absolutely agree as a reader that a good cover helps sell the book (ebook, print, audio, whatever).

Ugh! This poor author. I'm glad she's moving toward taking back control of her work.

Dyan Unfortunately, it is human nature to access with our eyes first. Why should book covers be any different? That is your first and probably most important chance, to draw a reader in. It just like with cooking, we eat with our eyes first. I'll will be the first to admit, that if a cover looks hokey and I do not know the author, I will overlook it.
