Who am I? What am I?

008982Most of you have read my Shadow Falls and Shadow Falls: After Dark series. An underlining theme in those books are about discovering who you are and what you are. I think by writing them, I sort of got curious about myself.  Now, as odd as I am, I’ve always been pretty sure I’m all human. But what kind of human?  One day before Christmas last year, I was watching TV and a commercial came on about checking your DNA.  I told hubby, “I want to do that.  Maybe I’ll have a little vampire in me.”

Well, for Christmas one of my gifts was the DNA test.  It was pretty easy.  Spit in a test tube and mail it off.  I remember my grandmother telling me that one of my great-great grandmothers on my grandfather’s side claimed to be French.  “She was lying,” my grandmother told me.  “She was American Indian.” I was also told that I had a lot of Scottish blood.

I sent that test tube off in the mail and waited for an email to answer my questions.  And I discovered that I’m 40ish % English or Scottish, I’m 16% Irish, 20ish % Scandinavian and . . . 6 %  . . . not American Indian, but . . .  French.  My grandma was wrong.  Then, I have a trace of Western Asian.  (Say what?)

My daughter, who is totally into the family history, did some checking on Ancestery.com.  And you know that French ancestor? Well, her name was Mary Lafoon Keith (Keith, which is my mother’s maiden name), and she is considered a Revolutionary War Heroine.  She was known to ride and warn the American’s that the enemy approached.

Could that be where I get my spunk?

Okay, so I’m not a vampire like Della, or like Kylie who is a Chameleon, or Miranda who is a witch, but it’s interesting to look back into our roots, or DNA, and see where we came from and question from where or who we might have gotten some of our odd behaviors.

Do you know where you came from?  What are your roots?

Tina Daymon I would love to do something like that. I have always thought about it, but never have done it. I wish I was a Chameleon like Kylie.

I know my family came from Russia. I wish I knew more about them and where they were. I knew my Great GrandParents and they lived until their 80's and 90's.

I think it would be a great discovery.
I love your book series.

Erin That's interesting, I know I'm Irish and Native American because of my grandparents and great-grandparents. Funny enough my mom and I were talking about doing this the other day because my dad was adopted and I don't know what I am on his side.

Ashley I may not have any supernatural in me but I am a Hatfield. My 4th great uncle was Devilance Hatfield. He was the one who could not be killed during the Hatfield-Mccoy feud. It is pretty neat to have someone so interesting in my family history!!

Kate Great post!
I don't really know a lot about my families history except when it comes to our name. I am German and so I have like three different last names depending on what dialect you speak. But it all comes back to a small cottage standing near a river and I honestly love it. I have always been drawn to the water and apparently it is a typical family trait.

Even though I don't know a lot about the past, I do know a lot about current generations and ever since WW2 my family can be found all over the world (my grandpa's siblings all fled the country). I would love to find out more though. Family history is really interesting. :)

Sandra "Jeanz" It is really interesting to learn about family history. One of my Aunts has done a lot of research and she got right back to 1800's to an Irish ancestor named Mary Ryan. Quite a coincidence as I named my son Ryan ,(sadly he was born early sleeping) but years later when my aunt told me about our ancestors I was like 'Oh wow'

Duchessbookworm I'm Indonesian, Irish, German or Dutch and definitely English and American. I'm not like a Shapeshifter because they are the class clown and I'm quite. They are the center of attention and I like to be in the back-observing. I'm like a werewolf because between a crowd and home I'd pick home. I don't really like crowds. I would say I keep to myself and my friend circle is small. Well, I have lots of friends but the friends that I trust-that circle is small. I don't talk a lot but I totally can if I want to. I'm loyal to the close friends I have and I'm called moody. Since I can be happy to sad to angry. When I get mad I usually do something to get me in trouble. I'm like a vampire because I do risky things. I will do stuff that everyone else won't do. Example: Field trip-no one wanted to go next I went b/c they were being babies and I got hurt. Didn't actually hurt but still. I prefer to be alone but still like the company of friends. I hate to show weakness. Especially around others. Like I don’t cry around people. I have to be the rock that people depend on. Have to be independent. I like to do things alone. Depending on others doesn't always work. Sometimes they don't hold up there end. I'm not really like a Fae. I'm not a leader or a follower. Like to stay away from the drama. I'm like a witch because I have specific likes and dislikes. I'm a little weird. I'm not afraid to be my own person. But I can be self conscious. I don't care if I don't have the right shoes or clothes or hair. God made me the way I am today. Being a Chameleon would be cool. Having a little of everything. Having all that would be cool but sometimes it's just good to be human.

DeOnna I have no idea what my back ground is but would love to! My mom was adopted, by the time she found her birth mother she was in bad health and her father had passed years before. My mom was told her fathers grave was washed away by a flood. He was apparently buried by a river.
I have one brother and it is amazing how much he looks like younger pictures of my moms father. Kind of creepy ;)
