Author Menna van Praag shared with us a look at her writing desk: “Before I was published, I wrote everywhere: in bed, on the sofa, in the garden, at the kitchen table… In fact, it wasn’t until the publication of my fourth book, THE DRESS SHOP OF DREAMS, that I at last claimed my own writing desk! I live in a very small flat, with my husband and son, and we only have very little spare space. But, to celebrate this publication, my husband very generously gave me this desk overlooking our garden. I absolutely adore it. Not writing on one’s lap certainly makes a difference to the writing experience. Of course, one can write wonderful stories anywhere – Stephen King wrote Carrie on his crossed knees in the laundry room of his double-wide trailer – but it’s a more splendid experience when you have your own special space dedicated to story-writing time. I know, after selling Carrie, Mr. King invested in a rather magnificent oak desk… Anyway, I love gazing out of this window seeking inspiration and I love looking at my pictures and all the pretty little things scattered about my desk. I try to keep it tidy – though I rarely succeed – because I always find myself inspired by beauty.”
