A very courageous cat and a lucky little boy

May 15, 1567 was the day that Mary Queen of Scots married James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, but since that marriage did not end well for either of them, I’d rather focus today on what may be the most heroic cat in the western world. When a four year old boy was suddenly attacked by a neighbor’s dog, the family’s cat came to the rescue and chased the dog off. The boy still needed ten stitches to close the wound, so this could have been even more serious if not for their courageous cat, who’d been adopted by the family five years ago. In case there are any skeptics out there, the entire incident was captured on video. http://www.turnto23.com/news/local-ne...

Lisa What a brave, amazing kitty.

Sharon I think the little boy was lucky that Tara, his cat, was so courageous, Lisa. She'll be the family hero for the rest of her life.

Charlene That is one incredible cat!

Sharon This may end up being the most watched cat video ever, Marita. It has literally gone global.

Steve As you might suspect from my Facebook Picture, my first reaction was "Sic 'em, kitty!" :-) Maybe cats can have a protective instinct. They can certainly feel affection.

Sharon This cat certainly felt protective, Steve, maybe both of the little boy and her "turf." Thank God she did, though.

message 7: by Steve (new)

Steve Probably right in that she was protecting her turf, too. Almost feel sorry for the dog. A rampaging cat can be scary.

Rebecca WOW! What a brave cat! Thank goodness the boy is alright and the cat....Why wasn't that dog contained? The owners of the dog need to be fined.

We have a dog like that, but, she is never allowed to roam outside and though Sheba is not vicious, still we are responsible owners and when outside we keep her on a leash.

Sharon I agree, Rebecca. You all know how much I love dogs, but I believe strongly that dog owners have a responsibility to the public. Sadly, there are so many people out there who are utterly irresponsible about dog ownership.

Loretta Lovely to see cats getting good press for bravery. I love this story.

Leila Just adding my own appreciation Sharon for giving us the link. I had heard of this from a friend but hadn't actually seen it. I agree with Loretta, it is good to see a cat getting press for such bravery. Thank goodness it was nearby the little boy. Those wounds were horrific! I too love dogs though owing to ill health I can't exercise them; so I now have my house cats who are so loving in their own feline way. All animal owners have a responsibility to the public.

Sharon I so agree with you, Leila. All of you know how much I love dogs, but dog owners have a responsibility to the general public to make sure their dogs behave and do no harm. What this dog did was scary because it was so deliberate and calculated, not at all a case of a dog getting excited and its prey drive kicking in.

Steve They offered to have the cat throw out the first baseball at a local game. Not sure how cat would react (mine would not be happy around cheering crowds), but would love to see a video of that!!

Leila The way it changed direction and ran round the car Sharon showed very clearly its intention was to harm. It didn't even pause but just launched itself at the little boy!!!!

Many years ago my husband and I bought a one year old springer spaniel from a lady who advertised him as a boisterous sort of dog and as her husband had a heart condition he couldn't manage him on walks.

We were looking for another one as our lassie collie had recently died of old age and my three boys were agitating for another. That was so unwise of us.

Unknown to us, this dog was wilful, savage and a potential killer. He had a history of attacking the family we bought him from; which of course they didn't tell us.

Within days he suddenly launched himself at me while I was washing up and bit deeply into my hand.He wouldn't let go either! My boys had to get him off me using a yard brush as he was hanging on with the total determination to harm.

We had to have him put to sleep on advice from the local vet. I cried for days as he was still such a young dog, but the vet had tests done and he was listed as unfit for re-training.

Sharon There is one, Steve; I saw it last night. The cat did not look thrilled to be there, not surprisingly. None of my cats liked to travel.
