Why I don't like speaking to reporters (a bit of a rant)

There is a reason why I am not a fan of speaking to reporters. I was recently interviewed by a freelance writer for The Walrus--a well-known Canadian Arts magazine. I said yes even though I was skeptical from the get-go.

Well... The link to the finished article just arrived in my inbox.
I read it.
I became annoyed.
I was going to ignore it and move on. But, as the day progressed, I just became more irritated by the condescending tone.

The title?

Bookphenomena (Micky) I've read your blog post, then the article. I'm making myself not comment on the article page, because then I'll be labelled an irate fan-reader with no intelligence or integrity! It doesn't matter that I'm a university lecturer and I don't always want to be reading research or textbooks, but lose myself in a good book. I am a proud reader of British classics (that's where my love of books started), NA, YA, sci-fi, crime. It's an eclectic mix but I'm comfortable with it. I love your writing and Tammara Webber's Easy....so what. Keep writing :-)

Rachel Wow...so I decided not to read the article but I did read your post. What I have to say to you is so what! Who cares what some freelance writer that did not take the time to read your book thinks about you or your book. I truly thought it was amazing! I have also read Easy and Slammed; and loved both of those books. Your book was equally powerfully, but in a different way. It stood out to me on its own merits. I was impressed and it made me want to read the next book and the next; which by the way, I did! So who cares! Your true fans know what you are really about; what message you are trying to get out there, but good for you for your "rant", as you like to call it. That was awesome! You should stand up for yourself, just don't let anyone keep you down for long. It was an amazing book, I can't wait for more. Just an FYI...I think you should choose to take her comment about your appearance as a compliment, she was probably just jealous :) Too bad that other woman, try to stoop that low especially against other woman! You rock, she will just have to deal with it! Thanks for who you are and the books that you write! I can't wait for more!

Amy I chose not to read the article as well and let me just say, from your blog about the article, this snot-nosed, ill informed, preconceived, spewer of bullshit can suck it! It's obvious there was an agenda AND an opinion. What a shitty thing to do to you. "Ten Tiny Breaths" is one of my absolute favorite books and it resonated with me long after I finished reading it. It was wonderful and I never once felt like it was NA porn, or some knock off of "Slammed" or any other book I've read...and believe me, I've read A LOT. It was a total stand alone and you are an amazing writer. Don't let that tool get you down. And BELIEVE ME, I am a fangirl from way back. Book Bash makes my toes curl when I just think about going and I know I speak for a lot of readers when I say THANK YOU for interacting with us! It means so much to us!

Melissa R Don't worry - I got your back! I read both your blog post and the article and typed a lengthy reply on the article's site. I completely agree with your post, and am disappointed in the way the author of the article simplified New Adult books and made them seem like they are less than any other type of literature. Love your books!
