Tines That Try Men’s Souls

A cheesy complaint: Why can’t Hizzoner and I eat pizza with a knife and fork?

Isabel Cohen Ms. Dowd, I think you are terrific -- funny, shrewd and fairly gutsy to boot. However, I am perplexed that you have chosen not to write an editorial about the proliferation of GMOs in our world. I would recommend Dr. Don Huber, Plant Biologist at Purdue University for 35 years to you. He and many other scientists (from MIT, Harvard, etc.) have studied gmos extensively and join 800+ scientists worldwide in debunking them as dangerous not only to our health and the animals we feed them to (in the form of gmo alfalfa, etc.), but creating a serious lack of oversight from our governmental agencies that should be studying them extensively instead of finding excuses not to. Somehow the chemical companies, which essentially is what Monsanto has always been and still is, have some kind of hold on our government and those of other countries where they sell their life-threatening substances. Even the U.S. Supreme Court is denying farmers their rights and taking Monsanto's side. I am surprised that you can stand by and let this devastation to the world continue. All pesticides must be banned. There are better ways to deal with all pests. There is nothing finer than organically grown food. Frankenfish will finish off the regular fish of its species in short order. (GMO Salmon is actually getting an ok from the EPA in spite of hundreds of thousands of petition-signers and pleas made to our Congressional officials. (What a joke they are!) The biggest joke is the article written by Amy Harmon, "Seeds of Fear" in the NYTimes last Friday (1-10-14). Her sources, other than scientists at Univ. of Hawaii at Hilo, and one member of the 9-member county council that would decide the fate of GMOs on the island of Hawaii. In 2012, Monsanto gave this university a one-time $600,000 for scholarships at the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (1% of its annual budget). This is typical behavior by Monsanto (does it really translate to "My Saint or Holy One???") They have bought the labeling votes in all states that have tried to pass it so far except for Connecticut and Maine. No to labelling voters gave just over $500 to the campaign against in California. The rest of the over $20 million to defeat the bill in Washington State and over $10 million in California was put up by junk food makers (GMA) and Monsanto. As I write this, Monsanto seems to be in charge of our FDA, Dept. of Ag, and EPA. They have not studied gmos and refuse to, as they know what the outcome will be. The study that Harmon debunks in France? There was nothing at all wrong with the study, but the pressure put on the scientists was such that they backed down. You can see what it did to the poor little mice by googling "extensive tumors on mice in French study of gmos" or something similar. I have been fighting for clean air, water and the safety of our wildlife for the past 40+ years. My friends are so tired of my badgering them to write letters or sign petitions to save our natural world. Thanking you in advance for contacting Dr. Huber, who is considered the number one gmo scientist in the world. He even used to do work with Monsanto until he found things that forced him to completely oppose them.
