BOOK EDITING

I must admit that to date I have not been very unimpressed with the level of work that I have received from people I have hired to edit my work. As an ebook writer I believe it is very important to present the best possible product you can when you try to sell your books. However, I have used three different editors so far and absolutely none of them have been up to standard. I find that I have to go through their "corrections" and re-work their work until I am pleased. I know that you get what you pay for, but I have invested substantial sums of money with my editors and have found them all hopelessly lacking. I hope on my next go around that I can find the right balance between cost and the delivery of a decent edit.

Thoughts?

Craig "I must admit that to date I have not been very unimpressed with the level of work that I have received from people I have hired to edit my work."

How about:

I must admit that to-date I have not been impressed with the quality of work I've received from editors I have hired.

Seriously though, I think it very much depends on your expectations going in. Are you looking for an editor to suggest major plot changes, or someone to tidy up loose sentences? The person you hire and the price you pay in both instances should be very different. Out of interest what kind of ballpark are you talking about cost wise? I'm almost at the point where I need an editor for my novel but a lot of the prices I've seen online are thousands of dollars!

Craig Hmm, yeah that would be annoying! How did you pick which editor(s) to use? Was there any ability to 'test the waters' beforehand, maybe with a sample chapter? I'm just curious as to how the whole thing works.

Writings such a personal endeavor, not sure I am ready for a 'professional' to point out my countless rookie mistakes just yet!
