It sends chills down my spine when I hear any talk of scrapping or walking away from a project.... I trust you Randy, but how can someone who's struggling to get that first publication, just forfit? I have absolutely no credibility to give advice in this situation (because I'm in the exact same boat) but I think I would just set it aside for a bit. I'm doing research for another novel and then I will probably go back to my crappy one. More than likely, I'll end up having a nightmare that this crappy novel is chasing me and moaning that it needs an end. Then I'll finish the dang thing out of pure, creative insomnia.

Randy sez: I walked away from the first novel I started. I realized that it was never going to work, so I just put it aside and started on something else. You don't ever throw anything away, obviously. You set it aside. It's still there if you ever want to go back to it. But sometimes you need to let go of a project. Sometimes an early project is a necessary step along the way to developing the skills you need as a writer. That doesn't mean you have to finish it, once you've developed the skills.
Well, that does put it in a better light considering the success you've had. I agree that I'm learning a lot as I go so I wouldn't stand to lose everything if I never completed that story.
I should add that I had worked on that first novel for two and a half years. Then I realized that it simply had too many fatal flaws and I set it aside. I didn't lose anything in doing that. I gained two and a half years of crucial experience in fiction writing. I created a storyworld which I still use to this day, and which was the foundation for several of my published novels. And I got rid of all the heaviness I'd been feeling with that particular book. For me, it was a good move. But I generally recommend that writers not make a drastic move without getting some feedback from a trusted writer or editor. It's hard to be objective about your own babies.
