A tragic hunt

March 27th, 1482 was the death date of Mary, the Duchess of Burgundy, only child of Charles the Bold, stepdaughter of Margaret of York. She was a great heiress and in 1477, she wed Maximilian, the Archduke of Austria, having heeded Margaret’s advice to avoid an alliance with the French. She and Maximilian had three children, but she died at only twenty-five in a tragic accident. She and her husband had been out hawking when her horse tripped, threw her, and then fell on top of her, breaking her spine. She died several days later. Her eldest son Philip became Duke of Burgundy and would wed Juana, sister of Katherine of Aragon, known to history as Juana la Loca, Juana the mad. G.W. Gortner has written an excellent novel about Juana, called The Last Queen.

MaryKatherine It's tragic that Mary died so young, and in such a violent way!

Also, I'm very interested in Juana, so I thank you for letting us know about The Last Queen.

Sharon I think you'll like The Last Queen, Mary Kate. I always thought Juana was a tragic figure and Christopher has done her justice in his novel.

MaryKatherine Yes, the only information I've read about her is in novels about Katherine of Aragon or those that mention her. Juana typically is a figure that hovers like a specter in these novels and the spread of her insanity is a constant threat.

Tina Galli I seem to recall reading in a story about this hunting accident or maybe I am mistaken. I distinctly remember it though because whoever wrote about it broke my heart with the Archduke being devastated by her death. Is it highlighted in one of your books Sharon?

Sharon No, not mine, Tina. Anne Easter Smith wrote a novel about Margaret of York; you might have read the scene in her book?

Gin Tadvick Mary Kate - The Last Queen is a great read. I think that you will highly enjoy!! G. W. Gortner is great! (But not as great a writer as Sharon - but then I am biased)!!
