Say Hello to Valek :)

I'd like to introduce you to the guy that's been keeping me busy these last four weeks - our newest family member - Valek! He's about 8 months old - a rescue from North Carolina and the sweetest most lovable kitty I've ever met. I wanted to name him Valentine as we picked him up on Valentine's day and he's such a lover boy, but the kids wanted to name him Valek and I was touched (also meant they really did like my books and weren't just saying so to avoid hurting my feelings).

Since he's all black, he blends in the shadows like Valek and is good at sneaking up on us and pouncing! His right ear is a little crinkled so he’s seen some action. ;) Sometimes, like when he's under the bed we can't even see him unless he opens his eyes and looks our way. Those big golden/green eyes just glow at night - it's also hard to take a picture of him if the light isn't really bright. He meets all the standards for the Bombay breed, but since he was found under a bush at 6 weeks old, no one can say for sure.

He likes to keep me company while I'm writing and will eventually settle down in the corner of my desk and help me with spelling (I'm so bad, I need a dictionary to help me do spell check).

As for our dog, Hazelnut (Hazel for short) – we had to put her to sleep this summer due to extreme old age. She was 16 years and 3 months old and that’s ancient for a Labrador Retriever. I was devastated – she was my best friend, following me everywhere and a constant companion. She helped me when I was stuck with my writing by always being willing to go for a walk no matter what the time or weather.

Losing her really derailed my writing – I was trying to get SPY GLASS done and just had the hardest time. The house was too quiet so I had to start listening to music, which was distracting at first – now I don’t even hear it.

Is it terrible that losing her was more of a blow than losing my 96 year-old grandmother? She passed away three days after Hazel. And while I love my grandmother and miss her, she wasn’t a part of my everyday life. To me, Hazel was our first child and will always be missed. I couldn’t even write this blog before now. As copies of Inside Out hit the shelves, you’ll see not only is it dedicated to my niece, Amy (the one who came to London with me) but it’s also in memory of my grandmother and Hazel.

We adopted a cat because after growing up with a dog and living with a dog for 16 years, I developed an allergy to dogs. I’ve never had a cat – so it should be interesting. I already have the scratches to prove I’m not as savvy – clipping a cat’s claws was one of those surprise tasks I hadn’t been expecting. But I’m liking the litter box – no more hunting the yard for those special gifts from the dog and no more shoes to clean when one of my kids didn’t watch where they were stepping. :)

Amelia Ahh...the wonder of cats. I have a black and white one myself that we got from the Humane Society. My brother named her so she got the out-of-style name of Gigi. But everyone just calls her Cat. :P Very stylish, indeed.

NORTH CAROLINA! Hello! That's where I'm located. No wonder this cat is so lovely, he's from my state! :P

My cat's eyes do that, too. In normal light, they're a brilliant green. But in a flash of light--like a camera flash--they turn gold. So whenever we take a picture of her--read: when *I* take a picture of her--her eyes are always a startling amber gold, not green. :P

Oh, isn't that just the joy of cats? I have multiple--MULTIPLE--scars from my cat. My dad said we should get her declawed, since the cat's favorite thing to do in the evening is claw up my arm. :P

Good luck with the mouser. And that's a beautiful dog. I don't know what I'd do without my German shepherd, Dora. I get choked up just thinking about it.

Good luck with the writing! I'm positively buzzing in anticipation for Spy Glass!

-Amelia

PS- You're coming down to Charlotte, NC, right? ANYtime soon would be nice. ;)

Tanya hmmm. we are in the market to adopt a puppy, and I have had "Valek" picked out for him (or her?) ever since we started looking (since there will be no more babies in our household, lol).

We are looking at Yellow Lab puppies, too. Double coincidence!

Samantha (A Dream of Books) He looks like the sweetest cat - perfect name!

Maria V. Snyder Thanks for all the comments!

Tanya - I'm jealous of your puppy search - I would have loved to get another dog, but couldn't with the allergies and the husband (he's more of a cat person). Although I do love my little lover boy.

Yellow labs are very nice dogs - friendly and easy-going. But in my mind Valek wouldn't match - Janco on the other hand has yellow lab tendencies. Lol - match the dog breed to the character - that would probably be a popular blog :)

Amelia - I have friends who live in Charlotte and NC so a trip back there wouldn't be out of the question ;>

Melanie What a truly gorgeous Cat! Valek sure looks like he lives up to his name - he's somewhat exotic too by the looks of those eyes (Maybe some persian in there somewhere), so maybe more like Valek than you thought :)

We have a gorgeous labrador, I full sympathise with you over yours Our Collie was put down from old age and arthritus last year and it broke our hearts!

Looking forward to reading more books from you!

Aerin Like previous poster, I fell for it, too - "Meet Valek" - um, yes, please! When, where?

My own twin kitties, Heidi and Lucy, send congratulations to Valek on finding his new home. Cheers!

C.G. Beautiful cat - very Valek-like in blending into shadows, I'm sure. ;)

I'm sorry about Hazel - I know how hard that can be. I had have my 22-year-old cat, Samantha, put to sleep a few years ago. In some ways it was harder than losing my mother because of the day-to-day loss.

I lost my younger cat, Natasha, last year about this time when she was killed by a car. She was 12 - a little tuxedo rescue cat - and I still miss her every day. Luckily I still have Tija - my fourteen-year-old fluffy tabby, with a bit of Maine Coon in her.

Enjoy your feline fur person - I don't know what I would do without mine.

Hannah It might just be the lighting but those eyes would really creep me out! I mean of course he is adorable but I cant help pictureing it pitch black and having nothing but those yellow eyes staring at me.

Most people dont even realize how much life a pet brings to the house. Its so nice to have my Casey alwasy be right there when I get home from school.
