Curiosity may have killed the cat and it certainly has got me into trouble a few times, but nevertheless, I'm wondering what motivates people to enter book giveaways.
I was one of the entrants in your give-away who unfortunately did not win.
First of all, I enter the give-aways because I enjoy books and reading them. But I also enter the give-aways because there is an added thrill to actually taking the chance of winning a book. I know 'winning' a book in the GoodReads give-aways is not really a contest, but it still constitutes a minor victory. There are a lot of people vying for the win, so being picked as a winner really counts !
And that brings me to the next point. Personally, I am a picky entrant. Because I see winning a give-away as something precious, I am equally as disappointed when I visit my 'give-aways you've entered' page and see the books that I have not been selected for. To reduce this sense of disappointment I only select give-aways that I have a reasonable chance of winning. I won't enter a give-away if there are hundreds of requests and only a handful of copies available. I know chances of being selected are slim, but I am not going to tempt fate into making me a loser again. Anyway, selecting give-aways on that basis is very arbitrary of course, because my mental 'no chance of winning' cut-off is very changeable and just because a book's give-away is not very highly requested when I enter doesn't mean it won't be nearer to the deadline. I only see one point in the give-away timeline usually, because I enter once every few weeks on average.
But all of this doesn't matter if I come across a book's description blurb that tells me I won't be enjoying a book, even if I win it. I know myself, there is nothing worse than having a book sit on a shelf unread, unloved. I skip poetry give-aways on principle because it's not for me. Usually I avoid non-fiction too, unless I has special interest to me. I avoid women's issues too mostly, usually because I find the tone of that category of books delectable generally. But this is all personal preference. I might even forego my 'no chance of winning' cut-off if there is a particularly good sounding supernatural fiction up for give-away. And then of course me entering also depends on the phase of the moon and the current tide and the movement of the planets and my cats molting state and all sorts !
Anyway, I joined your give-away primarily because I have a particular interest in Asian sources at the moment. For the first time in my life, I will be traveling to Asia for three weeks later this month and your give-away appealed to me for that reason. I am sure it is a fascinating book and I hope it does very well. Congratulations to all the winners, enjoy the book !
