Anne's influence on her husband King James VII contributed to his conversion to Catholicism many years after she did the same. It was a decision on his part, however, that caused his reign to falter and ultimately fail. Morever, it was the death knell of the House of Stuart monarchy as Catholicism never regained ground as a sovereign religious faith, even after the Glorious Revolution.

Anne's two surviving daughters, Mary and Anne, proved to be capable successors to their father.
