Things I predicted (almost) in Master Version 1.1
You've probably heard more than once that sci-fi writers are good at predicting things. As a newly minted sci-fi writer, with a book just released, I'll take a moment to brag about the things I've (kind of) predicted.
Note: There are mild spoilers ahead.
Two days after the release, Neuralink announced that it would test whether its brain implant could control a robotic arm. My book is all about this. It even features an Elon Musk prototype, Eaton Tusk. Yes, I know this isn’t difficult to “predict,” but still—the timing of the article surprised me a lot.
This next prediction is one I'm really proud of. In my book, there’s this line:
“On her way out, she leaves a present—a C-3PO robot set from the LEGO Star Wars collection. Very funny, ha ha.”
I wrote this line around March 2024. There was no such set back then (I googled it). This set was only released in August 2024! I gifted it to myself this Christmas and am building it now (photos pending).
Not exactly a prediction, but still notable. In the very first chapter of my book, there’s this paragraph:
“I’m lying on a moldy mattress in what seems to have once been an angsty teenage girl’s room. It looks like she tried to bury her rosy childhood beneath posters of emo bands I’ve never heard of. Five youths, decked out in hussar uniforms, glare down at me disapprovingly from a My Chemical Romance poster. Right, who are you to judge?”
I must confess I didn’t know this band when writing. I googled for emo groups and found it, and as the main hero of the book had just had a strong stimulating drug injected into his bloodstream, I thought that mentioning Chemical Romance here would be fitting. A few days before the book release, I read the sad news that Bob Bryar, former drummer of the band, had died. My condolences.
I have a chapter where a Russian air defense system, Pantsir-S2, is hacked and the hacker is quite shocked himself, seeing that he can easily launch the rocket at passenger aircraft. And well, you've probably heard the recent news—the plane from Azerbaijan was hit by Russians, most likely with a rocket launched from a Pantsir-S1.
That's it so far. I hope I've convinced you to read the Master Version 1.1 to find out about other things that are about to happen.
